Elon University students have the chance to tango, salsa and cha-cha-cha their way through Latin dance classes with El Centro de Espanol. El Centro provides students and faculty with learning opportunities to not only master the Spanish language, but also to understand the culture from Spanish-speaking countries around the world.

Little keeping tabs on ranking as postseason nears

With 12 wins, achieving the team’s highest ranking in program history earlier this year, and the longest winning streak to start a season in team history, Chris Little, head coach of Elon University’s men’s soccer team, has a lot to appreciate on the field.  Though the second-year head coach is always widening his focus, keeping an eye on national rankings and opposing team’s Ratings Percentage Index (RPI). “It’s really important to us and it’s always has been to the program because why would you put all your eggs into once basket in terms of just winning the conference tournament?” said head coach Chris Little.

Cheat Sheet: Speaker of the House

NEWS Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) is set to officially know if the title of Speaker of the House will be in his future.  Dubbed currently the House Speaker-in-waiting, the decision to elect Ryan to one of the top positions will be voted on during a secret-ballot GOP election Wednesday and a full House vote Thursday.  After years of resisted pressure to take on a more prominent role in the party, the decision for Ryan to nominate himself as a potential candidate for the position did not come quickly.

The eyes of the university

Progress in both technology and the size of Elon University has led to the number of campus security cameras balloon to roughly 500 total. The cameras are primarily located in places such as parking lots and campus pathways, Elon Police Chief Dennis Franks said in an email, where people could be vulnerable to crime that no one else could witness. Other cameras are installed on building exteriors and popular areas in larger, public buildings such as the Moseley Center and Belk Library.

Healing through helping

Three organizations came together to present inspirational speaker Dennis Gillan 7:30 p.m. Monday in Whitley Auditorium. The space was filled with students from different circles within Elon University, ranging from fraternity and sorority members to those interested in mental health. Zeta Beta Tau, Alpha Omicron Pi and Active Minds hosted Gillan to talk about his struggles and the greater context of mental health in college. Gillan opened his talk with a simple yet powerful statement. “My name is Dennis Gillan, and suicide stinks,” he said.

Elon student digs into Burlington’s past after historic hotel demolition

The Rockefeller Integrated Hotel stood on Burlington’s Maple Avenue before being demolished a few weeks ago. Created by McBride “Mack” Thompson, a prominent African American entrepreneur in the Jim Crow South, the hotel was both his home and a place for Black travelers to stay somewhere safe. A single box of papers was recovered from the demolition site by a neighbor. Marshall Sears, a sophomore researching African American entrepreneurship in Petersburg, digitizes documents including those found in the demolition, as a part of his undergraduate research.

NC state legislature yet to set state budget

North Carolina is still the only state without a budget. The current state funding is using budget numbers from 2023, the last time a budget was passed. The state passes a biennial budget which appropriates funds for two years.
