Inconsistent Phoenix preparing for SoCon Tournament

After a grueling 28-game regular season that had its ups and downs, the most important games of the Elon University women’s basketball team’s season have yet to be played. The Phoenix will play Appalachian State University at 2:15 p.m.

Phoenix holds off Blue Hose for fifth straight win

The Elon University softball team used timely hitting and a dominant showing on the mound from junior Caitlin O’Shea to hold off Presbyterian College, 4-2, March 5 at Hunt Softball Park. Phoenix sophomore starter Kayla Caruso lasted just two innings, giving up two runs on two hits.

Elon drops 12-inning tilt with High Point

Days after losing a tight one at home to High Point University, the Elon University baseball team fell to the Panthers, 2-1, in 12 innings March 5 at High Point. With one out in the 12th and runners at the corners, High Point center fielder Josh Greene lofted a 3-2 pitch into center, good for a sacrifice fly and to score the winning run. The Panthers drew a leadoff walk from Elon senior Jacob Baker, and Elon coach Mike Kennedy pulled Baker in favor of freshman Dimitri Lettas.

Elon's Rhodes named SoCon Freshman of the Year

Elon University freshman Jenifer Rhodes was named Southern Conference Freshman of the Year as voted on by the coaches, the league announced March 5. Rhodes averaged 9.7 points per game and 5.5 rebounds per game while being named CRONS Freshman of the Week three times throughout the course of the year.

Local Elon businesses respond to proposed town changes

The Town of Elon released its first downtown master plan two weeks ago. The plan calls for an eight-block change to the downtown area bordered by Williamson and Manning Avenues to the east and west and Haggard and Lebanon Avenues to the north and south. The proposal plans for 10 mixed-use buildings to house retail and restaurants on the first floor and offices or residential space on the top floors.

Elon blue lights aim to prevent crime at cost

A walk across Elon University’s campus in the middle of the night is never completely pitch-black, thanks in large part to the 31 blue light emergency response systems that illuminate the darker reaches of campus. The blue lights, which cost $5,000 to install and have yearly electricity fees, are a necessary crime deterrent on campus, according to Dennis Franks, Elon University police chief.

CCM, LEAF host Mardi Gras party

More than 100 people attended a Mardi Gras party sponsored by Catholic Campus Ministry (CCM) and Lutherans, Episcopalians and Friends (LEAF) at Elon March 4. Mardi Gras (the French term for Fat Tuesday) is a tradition in the Christian faith, celebrating the time before the Lenten season.
