Magnitude-7.8 earthquake strikes Ecuador

On Saturday, April 16, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Ecuador’s coast, killing hundreds and injuring thousands more. Countless others await aid in more rural areas. The hardest-hit area of the South American nation was the coastal Manabi Province, a main tourist area.

Baseball sweeps Hofstra as Daniels turns in strong outing

As the Elon University baseball team's offense stayed hot, freshman right-hander Mason Daniels turned in his longest outing of the year and the Phoenix completed its sweep of Hofstra University with a 10-5 victory on Sunday at Latham Park. It's Elon's eighth straight Colonial Athletic Association victory, its longest conference winning streak since 2009. Daniels went seven and one-third innings, making it past the dreaded sixth inning that's been hindering him, striking out six and allowing just two earned runs (five total) on five hits with three walks.

A night of ‘acanostalgia’

 “I feel like for me I’m like the old high school quarterback who can’t let go of my high school years.” Maddie Phillips, Elon class of 2008, came back to Elon last weekend – not for an alumni event or a speaking engagement, but to celebrate 15 years of Elon’s first all-women acapella group, Sweet Signatures. Phillips, who now lives in Charlotte, initially planned for the event to be a small gathering of some Sweet Sigs alumnae, but it snowballed into a performance at the group’s final concert of the year.

Women's tennis falls in CAA semis to James Madison

Elon University head women’s tennis coach Elizabeth Anderson said her team came up just short in the Phoenix’s 4-3 defeat to James Madison University in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) tennis championships April 23. No. 3 seeded JMU rattled off three straights singles victories to stun the No. 2 seeded Phoenix on its home courts.

Baseball keeps roll going, sweeps doubleheader Saturday

The offense kept rolling for the Elon University baseball team as the Phoenix swept a doubleheader with Hofstra University Saturday afternoon at Latham Park, winning 14-8 and 7-2. “I thought offensively we just carried over what we did at High Point [University] and with UNCG,” said Elon head coach Mike Kennedy.

Men's tennis falls in CAA semis at home to CofC

The Elon University men’s tennis team lost to the College of Charleston 4-3 in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) semifinals, with a 30-point tiebreaker being the decisive moment in the match. On Court No. 2, freshman Mario Paccini battled Cougar junior Rodrigo Encinas to a third set tiebreaker, then fought back and forth through a 30-point tiebreak.

Elon Hillel's Passover Seder embraces interactivity, engagement

Why is this night different from all other nights? This night — more specifically, Friday, April 22 — was Passover, the Jewish holiday celebrating the freedom of the Jewish people. A crowd big enough to almost fill Upstairs Lakeside powered through the rainy weather to celebrate the holiday with Hillel at 5:30 p.m.

Men's tennis breezes into CAA semifinals with shutout of Hofstra

The Elon University men’s tennis team cruised past Hofsta University 4-0 in the quarter-finals of the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) tennis championship April 22 from the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center. The Phoenix won each of its singles matches, winning in straight sets at the top four singles positions to advance to tomorrow’s semi-finals. Petar Tomic clinched the victory for the Phoenix without dropping a single point 6-0, 6-0.

Total Sorority Move responds to Sigma Kappa's Actual Sorority Move campaign

Instagram and Facebook feeds were filled with images of college women in lab coats or with books in hand with the hashtag #ActualSororityMove (ASM) on April 19. Elon Univeristy’s Kappa Zeta chapter of Sigma Kappa launched the ASM campaign in a Facebook post beginning with “Dear Total Sorority Move (and anyone else), This is a message for you...” The post went on describing the chapter was a group of real, passionate, smart women and are not what a website defines a sorority as. Sororities as a whole face a variety of stigmas such as having a certain appearance, paying for friendships and being more focused on partying than academia. Sigma Kappa tried to go beyond this, according to junior Amanda Steinman, a member of Sigma Kappa  who helped organize the campaign. “We are a multidimensional group of women, we have passions and dreams and goals, we fight for gender equality, we work together to lift one another up, we cannot fit a mold or be put into boxes,” said a statement from the Kappa Zeta chapter. Members of various chapters of Sigma Kappa as well as other sororities joined in and posted photos explaining how they were individuals while still being proud sorority sisters.

Election is rigged against Sanders, Trump

With just 29 Republican and 18 Democratic delegates in the caucuses and three Electoral College votes, it carries very little significance in the 2016 presidential election. But results from the April 9 Democratic caucuses reflect a larger issue of voter disenfranchisement.

In the last few weeks, Elon Dining unveiled new takeout boxes with large orange letters on the top, reading “Compost.” These new lables serve to remind students that the boxes are compostable, just one of many initiatives used to encourage students to live sustainably.

Elon University dance team wins 2 national titles

The Elon dance team huddled on stage with linked arms, waiting to hear their placement in Division I pom at the 2026 National Dance Association’s College National Championships. When the announcer proclaimed Elon champions, the dancers burst into cheers, realizing they’d secured Elon’s first pom category win in program history. The next day, they became two-time national champions with a first place finish in Division I hip hop.

Dismissal of Leandro case concerns public school advocates

The Leandro Comprehensive Remedial Plan, a 2021 proposed public school funding plan to ensure North Carolina meets its educational standards as outlined in the state constitution, called for $5.5 billion over eight years. In Alamance County, the plan would have allocated $56.7 million to the Alamance-Burlington School System — a 38% budget increase as of 2022 — and $15.7 million to early education programs by 2028.
