Community Connections panel discusses solutions for economic growth

When the Council on Civic Engagement at Elon University and the Burlington Times-News co-sponsored the program “Alamance 2030: What will our Community Be Like in 15 Years” Wednesday evening in McKinnon Hall, a consensus was made: The future of Alamance County is dependent upon creating pleasant communities for young professionals and families, while also improving the infrastructure of the region. A panel of four guests, moderated by Jason Husser, assistant professor of political science and policy studies, shared insights into the demographic and economic changes occurring in Alamance County and the implications for the future. Law school enrollment on the decline

Since Elon University School of Law was founded in 2006, national tuition has, with few exceptions, been on the rise while employment prospects have been on the decline. To combat these issues, Elon is making an effort to distance itself from some of tried-and-true manners in which law has been taught for generations.

Students enjoy decline in gas prices

In recent months, consumers across the country have been enjoying lower prices at the pump as a result of booming production in the Midwest and dropping crude futures worldwide. According to the American Automobile Association (AAA), the national average per gallon of gasoline has dropped below $3.00 per gallon for the first time in nearly four years.

Recap of Community Connections forum, Alamance County: 2030

Community Connections brought together a panel on Feb. 4, to discuss what Alamance County's future might look like in the year 2030. The panel consisted of: David Cheek, Mebane City Manager; April Durr, Director of Community Impact, United Way of Alamance County; Ryan Kirk, Assistant Professor of Geography and Environmental Studies; and Amy Nelson, Director of Burlington Planning and Economic Development. Dr. Jason Husser, the Assistant Director of the Elon Poll, encouraged the audience, Alamance County residents and Elon students, to ask the panel about their concerns for the future of Alamance County. Concerns that came up in the discussion included gun violence, a developing Burlington, a hurting public school system and what all of that meant for economic tourism, resident job opportunities, as well as resident security and the environments security. While Nelson spoke of the vast developments occurring in the city of Burlington, Kirk said there is an estimated total of a 6 percent change in population age groups. As Burlington develops, high paying jobs and careers are still scarce in Alamance County.

Staff scrambles to bring students back to Elon amidst delays

As many students, faculty and staff returned from Elon University Study Abroad and Study USA programs, they were greeted by a traveler’s worst nightmare: a record-breaking series of winter storms. Winter Storm Juno, accompanied by other winter storms in the Northeast region, have caused havoc across the nation, affecting the lives of millions of people and testing the patience of travelers.

Student research discovers suspected cause of plant disease

During his freshman year, now-senior Billy Impagliazzo took two classes taught by biology professor Antonio Izzo. When he got to Elon, Impagliazzo said he knew he wanted to take part in research projects. In his sophomore year, Impagliazzo went to Izzo to discuss research opportunities he had in his lab. Izzo said he believed Impagliazzo would conduct research for only a semester, but almost three years later, Impagliazzo has identified the main microbe infecting the blue curls plant and has presented his research on SURF Day.

Elon student digs into Burlington’s past after historic hotel demolition

The Rockefeller Integrated Hotel stood on Burlington’s Maple Avenue before being demolished a few weeks ago. Created by McBride “Mack” Thompson, a prominent African American entrepreneur in the Jim Crow South, the hotel was both his home and a place for Black travelers to stay somewhere safe. A single box of papers was recovered from the demolition site by a neighbor. Marshall Sears, a sophomore researching African American entrepreneurship in Petersburg, digitizes documents including those found in the demolition, as a part of his undergraduate research.
