DOJ files reveal Jeffrey Epstein paid tuition for former Elon University student

Files released by the Department of Justice revealed that financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein paid tuition for a student attending Elon University in fall 2009. Documents show that Epstein paid $12,744 toward Fall Term tuition for a student identified as "Thomas," the son of Jeanne Brennan Wiebracht, the former campaign accountant for then-U.S. Virgin Islands Gov. John de Jongh.

Elon University to cancel Feb. 2 classes, close offices

In-person meetings for undergraduate and graduate classes on Feb. 2 are canceled, Vice President for Student Life Jon Dooley announced in an email Feb. 1. The cancellation comes after a winter storm on Jan. 31 that swept across the state. According to Dooley’s email to the campus community, the nearby area received anywhere from 7-12 inches of snow.

ABSS to have Remote Learning Day Feb. 2

The Alamance-Burlington School System announced Feb. 1 that all facilities and schools will be closed Feb. 2, and that students and staff will participate in a Remote Learning Day. The decision comes after a winter storm that swept across North Carolina on Jan. 31.

2nd half rally comes up short against Stony Brook

For much of the first half and early in the second, Stony Brook seemed to have an answer for every comeback attempt by Elon. The men’s basketball team trailed by double digits for the majority of the game, and despite clawing their way back, it wasn’t enough as Stony Brook held on for a 72-68 win.

Elon University women’s basketball falls to conference-leading Charleston

In Elon women’s basketball’s 77-69 loss to the College of Charleston Cougars, strategic positioning, discipline and physicality took center stage. The game, which was pushed from a 7 p.m. to 6 p.m. tip-off due to weather, was a rematch from earlier in the season, when Elon fell to Charleston 87-64. Charleston entered the game on a nine-game win streak, undefeated in the Coastal Athletic Association. The team is the best offensive, rebounding and three-point shooting team in the CAA. Head coach Charlotte Smith said she wanted to present the Cougars with a 3-1-1 zone, which she said is unorthodox against a good shooting team.

Elon University to close early Friday ahead of winter storm

Elon University offices will close at 3 p.m. Jan. 30 to allow for preparation time ahead of the upcoming winter storm. Vice President of Student Life Jon Dooley announced the closure in an email Jan. 30 that also outlined changes to campus parking and weekend basketball schedules.

Elon University tuition to increase by 5.42% for 2026-27 academic year

Elon’s tuition, fees, food and housing will increase by 4.93% for the 2026-27 academic year. This is the total cost of attendance — which includes tuition, fees, food and housing costs — at Elon and is an increase of about $3,240. Tuition and fees alone will increase by $2,645, which is a 5.42% increase. Currently, Elon's total cost of attendance is $65,663. Next year, the total cost of attendance will be $68,903 according to Elon's admissions website.

Elon University men’s basketball storms back to top William & Mary

In a battle between the Coastal Athletic Association’s top two offenses, it was Elon men’s basketball’s defense that stood strong in a 79-76 win for the Phoenix against the College of William & Mary Tribe. There was a season-high crowd of 1,815 fans in attendance for Elon’s annual “jersey night,” where the first 200 attendees received a free team jersey after the game. The Phoenix delivered the audience a thrilling comeback victory.

ABSS transitions to Optional Teacher Workday Jan. 30

The Alamance-Burlington School System announced Jan. 29 that there will be no remote learning for students Jan. 30, and teachers will have an optional workday. The district said the decision was made to preserve its final remote learning day for potential future weather events.

Elon Town Council discusses possible acquisition of Labcorp property

The Elon Town Council discussed possible funding paths for a new municipal building and police station. The Town agreed to purchase a Labcorp property at 112 Orange Drive in the fall. The purchase has not gone through and members debated costs Jan. 27. There were no participants in the public comments portion of the meeting.

OPINION: The small town snow crisis that never was

I came across a sarcastic Fizz post while I walked through the snow. It showed a concentrated clump of snow salt on the sidewalk and read, “Great! We definitely won’t get any ice here!” I saw a couple of posts like this on the student social media app. I started to wonder if people realized the effort Facilities Management makes against the scourge of nature.

According to an email from Vice President of Student Life Jon Dooley, Elon University offices will be closed Jan. 26 due to a winter storm warning in effect through 1 p.m. Jan. 26. The email also stated that graduate and law classes will not be held in-person at the Elon, Greensboro or Charlotte campus locations Jan. 26.

U.S. House passes SAVE America Act, Senate to consider it soon

The Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act was passed by the United States House of Representatives by a vote of 218-213 on Feb. 11, with one Democrat breaking party lines to vote to pass the bill. The bill will now be considered by the Senate, where it needs 60 votes to pass before going to President Donald Trump’s desk for his signature.
