Graham receives 3M grant for drinking water

Graham and Burlington received $3 million each from the state’s Drinking Water Reserve Loan Fund to update two water treatment facilities in Alamance County. Upgrading drinking water treatments in Burlington and adding renovations to the Graham-Mebane Water Treatment Plant.

NC electricity costs, consumption expected to rise

North Carolina electricity bills have risen 22% since 2020, according to a February report from the North Carolina Energy Policy Task Force. With data centers being proposed across North Carolina, those costs could rise even more. Currently, North Carolina hosts data centers from companies such as Google, Meta and Apple.

Elon University receives ‘A’ in ADL report card for 3rd straight year

The Anti-Defamation League released its third Campus Antisemitism Report Card, assessing 150 colleges across criteria concerning administrative policies, Jewish life on campus and campus conduct and climate concerns. Elon University received an “A” for the third straight year, joining 22 other schools nationwide that earned the top grade. Duke University, Wake Forest University, and the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, all earned “B’s.” North Carolina State University received a “D”, one of eight across the nation to receive that grade.

Dance scholar blends dance, activism in McCrary Theatre talk

The Elon community found rhythm in McCrary Theatre as they gathered to hear Brenda Dixon-Gottschild discuss and perform her research on the Africanist presence in American dance. The self-proclaimed “anti-racist” told the audience that while she was reading from her notes, the event would not be a traditional academic presentation.

‘Always willing to learn’: Softball captain’s insight boosts Elon’s performance, morale

Elon softball captain and junior Greta Hessenthaler’s role this season looks a lot different than when she first joined the team in 2023. As their lead-off hitter, it’s her job to read the pitcher and communicate back to her team and coaches what she observes at the plate. Named a captain as a sophomore, Hessenthaler quickly grew into one of the team’s lead voices. She said her understanding of the game makes her a stronger leader. Head coach Kathy Bocock points to Hessenthaler’s loyalty to the team as a characteristic of a good captain.

Friends of the Alamance County Public Libraries host spring book sale

Readers across Alamance County are filling up the basement of May Memorial Library in Burlington as the Friends of the Alamance County Public Libraries host their spring book sale. The sale began on March 6 and runs through March 15, selling books, DVDs, CDs and vinyl records. Volunteer Beth Cooley said the energy is different in the first few days of the sale.

Assistant manager at The Oak House arrested for sexual exploitation charge

A Burlington man who works at The Oak House coffee shop in downtown Elon as an assistant manager was arrested March 5 and charged with sexual exploitation of a minor, according to a Burlington Police Department press release. 23-year-old Roberto Allen Jimenez was charged with one count of second-degree exploitation of a minor and was taken to the Alamance County Detention Facility.

Gas leak prompts evacuations in Historic Neighborhood

At 10:42 a.m., an E-Alert sent out by Elon University warned the campus of a gas leak and told the community to stay clear of the Historic Neighborhood until further notice. The smell of gasoline had begun to waft over the neighborhood twenty minutes earlier. Soon after, five fire engines congregated on East Haggard and blocked off street access. Students in buildings around the Duke Building were evacuated to the outside throughout the Historic Neighborhood, staying clear of the leak.

Local quilt guild creates community through craft

Dressed in patchwork sweaters, carrying hand-stitched shoulder bags and wearing name tags made from scrap fabric, the Alamance Piecemakers Quilt Guild meets every month at the Burlington Elmira Community Center. The group, made up of about 50 women, shares their latest crafts, plans upcoming workshops and discusses new techniques they’ve learned. The guild, for many of these women, is about more than quilts; it’s about kinship and collaboration.

Elon town police remind drivers of parking law

Elon drivers are returning to their parked cars to find white slips of paper tucked under their windshield wipers. But these aren’t tickets. The Town of Elon Police Department left “courtesy notices” on the windshields of cars parked in downtown Elon. These notices contain reminders of eight parking laws Administrative Sergeant Scott Swink said are often violated.

Elon hockey embraces new era of camaraderie, consistency

Elon University men’s club hockey head coach Travis Harris didn’t promise the team championships. He promised them accountability. What it is today looks dramatically different from what he inherited at his first team meeting in May. The Phoenix won two out of 10 games in the 2024-2025 season — the year before Harris arrived. Players were missing practices and games. The program had burned through its budget a month and a half before the season ended, according to Harris, who said that Elon essentially handed the team a final opportunity to prove it could survive.

13th annual Elon Day sparks day of giving

As donations continue to roll in on Elon University’s 13th annual Elon Day, students and faculty are excited about the day of giving. Events were happening all over campus — like a special College Coffee, senior toast and a performance from comedian Leslie Jones.Last year, Elon raised the most money in Elon Day history, with over $3.1 million and a total of 6,385 gifts. This year, as of 6:13 p.m., Elon had only raised a little over half of that — $1.6 million with 3,835 total gifts — with less than six hours left to raise more money.

Color, culture, community collide at Elon’s Holi festival

An annual Elon tradition mixed vibrant powder with the blooming flowers as the community celebrated Holi on April 10, the Hindu festival of colors. In Hindu tradition, the festival marks the arrival of spring, and at Elon, that celebration came alive as bursts of color, music, and kites filled the Phi Beta Kappa Commons throughout the afternoon.
