Updated as of 12:06 a.m. March 10 to include information about reporting a cow sighting.
Two domestic cows are loose on Elon University’s campus after escaping from a nearby property.
One cow was first spotted around 7 p.m. near Danieley Gym, according to Elon Campus Safety and Police Sgt. Ryan Gerner.
Gerner said the cows were recently purchased by new owners and are not used to being around people.
“They’re terrified of people,” Gerner said. “So they keep running away.”
Gerner, who was stationed outside the Francis Center, said officers are focused on creating a perimeter around the cows.
“Our biggest thing right now is just sitting here and waiting,” Gerner said. “We know they're not a threat, we’re just trying to make sure they're not in the roads.”
Gerner said the cow spotted near the Francis Center was last seen heading north toward the train tracks.
Both cows remain loose as of 9:56 p.m.
Also, as of 9:56 p.m., Elon Campus Safety and Police officials said the cows have traveled off campus.
Campus Safety and Police are urging people not to chase the cows. Instead, anyone who spots one should contact Campus Safety and Police.
