Cheat Sheet: Free community college

President Barack Obama has big goals regarding American education standards. A major part of his plan includes making the first two years of community college free for any student with a C+ average or better. By 2020, Obama hopes that the United States will once again have the highest proportion of college graduates in the world, and that community colleges will produce an additional five million of them. His desire for an additional population of community college graduates stems from the increasing perceived need to have at least an associate’s degree in the professional world.

Review: ‘Tapped Out!’ demonstrates talent, exuberance

Tap dancers dressed as Mario and Luigi, an all-female rendition of Fall Out Boy’s “Young Volcanoes,” and a dance choreographed to Matt and Kim’s “Daylight.” These pieces, among others, were featured in “Tapped Out!,” a medley that combines tap and vocal performances into a short show that showcases some of the best performers Elon University has to offer. During the last weekend of Winter Term, select faculty and students from Elon’s Department of Performing Arts performed their yearly rendition of “Tapped Out!” There were only four performances, which were split between Friday and Saturday, Jan.

TOWSON, Md. -- The Elon Women's Basketball team scored a program record 15 three-point shots on its way to an 84-70 victory over Towson Thursday evening, sweeping the season series. Senior Zora Stephenson led the way with six three-pointers made.

Elon comeback falls short against Drexel

A last-minute comeback attempt fell just short for the Elon University men's basketball team as the Phoenix pulled within three with seconds remaining but couldn't finish off in a 67-63 loss to Drexel at Alumni Gym on Thursday night. With 13.7 seconds remaining Austin Hamilton sank two free throws to pull Elon within three, 66-63.

SGA Senate Recap: Feb. 5

At Thursday night’s SGA Senate meeting, 11 students were unanimously voted and sworn in to new positions as senators and executive board members. The following students were voted into new positions for the semester: Ryan Chronowic, Executive Secretary Ruth Robinson, Junior Class Vice President Ross Rosati, Freshman Senator Austin Martin, Freshman Vice President Grace McDavid, School of Education Bobby King, Government Seat Brintha Renganathan, Campus Programs Meredith Kornfeind, Campus Programs Miles Williams, Athletics Seat Kyle Porro, Speaker Pro Tempore Heather Lamb, Assistant Secretary SGA President Joe Incorvia proposed the creation of legislation in Trent Stetler’s honor.

Community Connections panel discusses solutions for economic growth

When the Council on Civic Engagement at Elon University and the Burlington Times-News co-sponsored the program “Alamance 2030: What will our Community Be Like in 15 Years” Wednesday evening in McKinnon Hall, a consensus was made: The future of Alamance County is dependent upon creating pleasant communities for young professionals and families, while also improving the infrastructure of the region. A panel of four guests, moderated by Jason Husser, assistant professor of political science and policy studies, shared insights into the demographic and economic changes occurring in Alamance County and the implications for the future. Panelist David Cheek, Mebane City Manager, cited the changes that have occurred in Durham since 2000 as inspiration for Alamance County. “I’ve spent a little time in downtown Durham.

Law school enrollment on the decline

Since Elon University School of Law was founded in 2006, national tuition has, with few exceptions, been on the rise while employment prospects have been on the decline. To combat these issues, Elon is making an effort to distance itself from some of tried-and-true manners in which law has been taught for generations.

Students enjoy decline in gas prices

In recent months, consumers across the country have been enjoying lower prices at the pump as a result of booming production in the Midwest and dropping crude futures worldwide. According to the American Automobile Association (AAA), the national average per gallon of gasoline has dropped below $3.00 per gallon for the first time in nearly four years.

Candidates for dean of Student Health and Well-Being present in front of Elon community

Candidates for the next dean of Student Health and Well-Being at Elon University presented in front of the Elon community in recent weeks as part of the selection process. The position is currently held by Jana Lynn Patterson, who is retiring in fall 2026 after 40 years at Elon University. The dean will lead the HealthEU Initiative and the Boldly Elon strategic plan, while supervising departments like Counseling Services and Student Health Services. They will also manage the new 135,000 square foot HealthEU building, set to open in fall 2026.
