Jeb Bush suspends presidential campaign

By Andrew Feather Elon Local News COLUMBIA, S.C. — Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush suspended his campaign for the 2016 Republican nomination on Saturday night following a fourth place finish in the South Carolina Primary. “Tonight I am suspending my campaign,” Bush told a crowd of supporters at his primary watch party in Columbia, South Carolina. “The people of Iowa and New Hampshire and South Carolina have spoken, and I really respect their decision,” he said, referencing his disappointing finish in the early voting states.

Rubio surges after strong South Carolina showing

Elon Local News COLUMBIA, S.C. — In a close second-place race that at this moment is too close to call, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) and Ted Cruz (R-Texas) battled all night to finish ahead of one another in the South Carolina Republican primary. According to CNN, Rubio currently holds an approximated 1,000 vote lead over Cruz with an estimated 99 percent of the votes accounted for. While Rubio may not have been able to overcome Donald Trump’s victory in the Palmetto State, the Florida Senator says that there are important takeaways from tonight’s performance.

Stopping fear through education: Eradicating Islamophobia from Elon's campus

Baseball loses both games in Saturday doubleheader

The Elon University baseball team lost both games on Saturday’s doubleheader against Wright State University, 13-11 in 10 innings and 10-2. The three losses to start the season gives Elon its first 0-3 start since 1983, when Elon lost its first four games of the season.

Women's tennis drops Friday afternoon duel to FGCU

The Elon University women’s tennis team couldn’t get enough wins in the singles, falling to Florida Gulf Coast University 4-3 Friday afternoon. “We’re making some strides,"  said head coach Elizabeth Anderson. "We’ve played a really tough schedule, so that makes it a little more challenging, but I think it will pay off for us in the long run." Elon dropped the doubles point, but freshman Suzanne Zenoni got the Phoenix on the board with her win over sophomore Julianna Curtis in straight sets 6-2, 6-1.

Six-run seventh sinks baseball in opening day defeat

 The Elon University baseball team’s 9-7 opening day defeat to Wright State University capitulated in the top of the 7th inning.  Entering the frame with a four run lead, a trio of Elon relief pitchers allowed six runs on four hits and three walks to give Wright State a lead it would not surrender. “Their bullpen threw a lot of strikes and made some good pitches,” said senior first baseman Tyler McVicar.

Men's basketball uses hot second half to win at Drexel

A hot-shooting second half led the Elon University men’s basketball team to an 81-76 victory over Drexel University Thursday night in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play. The Phoenix shot 75 percent in the second half, finishing 18-of-24 from the field and 6-of-8 from behind the arc.

A time for new beginnings

It is the beginning of a new semester. Well, a week or two in — close enough. We are still mostly excited about going to class, still reading a little bit ahead and working toward the growth and learning that is promised. And how well I remember those moments at the beginning, when it is overwhelmingly apparent how much there is to learn, how much is beyond our capacity and understanding, and how far the goal is. But by the end of the term, we will all be amazed.

Softball wins home opener behind two home runs

The Elon University softball team started its home season off with a bang, defeating North Carolina A&T State University 14-4 Wednesday afternoon. Sophomore third baseman Kristin Hoover hit a grand slam in the sixth to end the game on a run-rule.
