Jack Attack: Isenbarger's 34 lead Phoenix to win over The Citadel

One word that Elon sophomore guard Jack Isenbarger likes to use to describe his play is “aggressive.” Saturday night certainly showcased that, as the Zionsville, Ind., native scored a career-high 34 points to lead the Elon Phoenix to a crucial home victory over The Citadel Bulldogs 71-66 Saturday night in Alumni Gym.

Mac Miller, The White Panda to perform at spring show

The Elon University Student Union Board announced Mac Miller and The White Panda will perform at the Spring Show during the final timeout of the first half of Saturday's men's basketball game. "I think it was an awesome reaction," SUB President Amanda Long said.

Elon community mourns loss of friend, colleague Jim Pickens

Jim Pickens, a former Elon University professor, died today. Pickens worked as a professor of psychology for more than two decades at Elon before retiring in 2007. "He, with a couple of other people, served as a conscious for the university in some significant ways," said Jeffery Pugh, professor of religious studies at Elon University. Pugh associates the Students for Peace and Justice with the legacy of his friend, he said. Pickens served as advisor to the organization throughout his time at Elon, according to an article published on E-Net. He motivated the creation of the Non-violence Studies minor and traveled to Nicaragua and Guatemala as part of Witness for Peace trips. "He was always putting before use issues like Nicaragua or the situation in Honduras or what the School of the Americas was up to in Fort Benning and other kinds of peace and justice issues," Pugh said.

Despite the administration and students uniting against instances of prejudice during the fall, most notably the creation of the Not on our Campus movement, a homophobic slur was yelled at an Elon University student Wednesday night. What remains to be seen is how Elon handles the Catch-22 presented to them.

Phoenix win wild, 'roller coaster of emotions' double-overtime game

Roger Dugas’s lone contribution to the statistics sheet, besides a missed field goal, was an assist, but boy, was it a big one. The Elon junior forward’s inbound pass down the court found sophomore guard Jack Isenbarger for an easy layup with 17 seconds left in double-overtime to put the winning points on the board in an intense contest as the Elon Phoenix defeated the College of Charleston Cougars 99-98 in Alumni Gym Thursday night. “I am very proud that we as a team got a great, great victory and it’s a team victory,” Elon head coach Matt Matheny said.

Senior musician finds early success in solo career

Local band Phoenix Highway is a familiar entity on Elon University’s campus. Senior Frank Hurd, 2011 graduate Jacob Danieley and 2010 graduate Michael Lobacz started the band in 2009, and have since added junior Ben Soldate and freshman Jake Valente to the group. But Hurd, one of the band’s founding members, has recently begun to pursue a solo music career as well. Though he will be receiving a degree in music technology and communications when he graduates in May, Hurd had little to do with music when he was younger.

Dominic Del Corso treasures memories of Elon in final days

Dominic Del Corso has been around the world without ever leaving his Burlington home. Del Corso, a former employee of Acorn Coffee Shop, befriended a generation of Elon University students and treasured a collection of postcards they mailed him from around the world. Battling an advanced case of lung cancer, Del Corso is receiving treatment at a hospice center in Burlington and is not expected to survive much longer, according to Danelle Del Corso, his daughter. Del Corso made friends with students as well as Acorn employees.

Winter Term course pushes students out of comfort zone

Students enrolled in the Winter Term course “French Theater in Production” put the finishing touches on their production of Moliere’s “Le bourgeois gentilhomme,” which they will perform entirely in French. Each student was expected to have a role in the play, through acting or production, according to Olivia Choplin, assistant professor of French, pictured above. Audience members will be able to follow the prose through English subtitles. The play will take place Feb. 4 in Yeager Recital Hall.

Elon Town Council approves Elon University tax amendment, ordinances, resolutions

Elon Town Council discussed a tax amendment, approved its audit contract, and passed an ordinance for its purchase of property at 112 Orange Dr. The agenda for the meeting stated the property was at 112 Orange St., but this is incorrect. Elon Mayor Emily Sharpe wasn’t present for the meeting. Mayor pro tempore Monti Allison presided over the meeting Feb. 23.

Elon University enrollment drops below 6,000 for first time since 2018

Elon University’s undergraduate enrollment has dipped below 6,000 students for the first time since spring 2018, according to the Spring Registrar’s Report released Feb. 23. This decrease comes after an 11.6% drop in enrollment for the class of 2029. Part of this pattern can be attributed to the “demographic cliff,” the decreasing supply of college students from a falling national birth rate that began in 2007. The total undergraduate enrollment of 5,974 is a decrease from the 6,226 students the university reported in the spring of 2025. It’s also roughly 200 fewer students than the 6,191 reported in fall 2025. Though overall student numbers dropped, there was also an increase of 523 seniors, compared to the fall report.
