The layout this week differed from our three previous articles. We elected to use a graphic to illustrate the importance of the two front page articles. The two articles, discuss the university's approach to diversity and acts of discrimination on campus. The graphic intends to illustrate that while the university promotes an environment welcoming of diversity, discrimination still exists on campus. We question which one will define the Elon and report on the initiatives organized to address these concerns. Other interesting news pieces include:

Local author celebrates love through book, website: In the spirit of Valentine's Day, Grace Elkus attended a book signing for a local author's book that contains a compilation of love letters. Elon microfinance initiative, a student group on Elon’s campus that works as a liaison for small businesses, is helping her the author publicize her book.

Coordinator of QueErLON blog aims to counteract labels of LGBTQ community: Ross Wade, assistant director of career services for the school of communications, is now coordinating content for the QueErLON blog, which falls under the umbrella of Elon’s new LGBTQ office led by Kirstin Ringelberg. Wade is encouraging others to share their personal experiences as a member of the LGBTQ community or its allies.

Bike theft recurring on campus, campus police indicate solutions: Natalie Allison reported on recurring bike thefts on campus. According to Vickie Moehlman, a captain at Campus Safety and Police, 30 bike larcenies were reported on campus in 2010. That number went up in 2011, and 43 bikes were reported missing to campus security, although she speculates more are stolen than are reported. Moehlman advises using a u-lock to prevent bike theft.

The board of trustees have set the cost of tuition for the 2012-2013 fiscal year: There will be a 3.99 percent increase, and tuition will cost $28,633, including room and board. Fees for a typical undergraduate student are set to $9,827.
