Student brings news DMAX Club to Campus

DMAX is a new student organization that wants to offer resources to students who are dealing with mental health issues. Junior Ben Kleinman is starting an organization on campus in honor of one of his friends. "I had a good friend in high school his name was Dan Maxwell, and he passed away," Kleinman said.

Football attempts to move on to ‘new normalcy’

The Elon University football team returned to campus late Saturday night after defeating the University of Maine 27-22 earlier in the day. The conclusion to a week of unimaginable tragedy — the death of junior wide receiver Demitri Allison — had ended in triumph. But for head coach Rich Skrosky, recalling the week that was has left some words lingering in his mind. “One of the coaches — and so many coaches reached out — not to say anyone specific, but a name most people would know, his words were, ‘This week will be harder than last,’” Skrosky said, then paused, letting the words hang in the air. Small House creates jazz jams

Many students walk into Oakhouse on Elon University’s campus expecting a relaxing and comfortable place to hang out with friends and  decompress from school.  What many students don’t realize is that if they walk into Oakhouse on the first Friday of the month, they can expect jazz music from Small House. Small House is a jazz band comprised of six Elon students.  Brandon Mitchell, one of the band’s members, has always thought about starting a band, he said.  The first step was to start comprising original pieces. Not after long the band got their gig at Oakhouse—First Friday Jazz Jams.  “Its been good so far because people are really coming by to show their support,” Mitchell said.  The band describes themselves as jazz fusion with a touch of many types of different music Mitchell said. At the jazz jams, Small House loosely follows a routine.  First, the band plays some of their original compositions.  Then, after taking a short break they open the floor up to anyone who wants to collaborate.  “Vocalists can sing with us, instrumentalists,” he said.  “From there we branch out and do whatever people want to do.  We kind of like to reach back to the community and reach back to other musicians.” One of Small House’s focuses is to remain connected with the community, he said.  “Jazz in general is a universal language,” he said.  “It really does bring people together.  We’re really trying to focus on the community aspect.  We’re trying to introduce this music to people.  We want people to share this experience with us because it really is an experience for us too.” Brandon, a music performance major with a concentration in percussion, has been collaborating with members of the band for a while.

Search continues for the new dean of the College of Arts and Sciences

While construction on Park Place at Elon and the School of Communications garners most of the campuses' attention, the Elon University College of Arts and Sciences will be undergoing significant changes to its administration. The position of dean for the college was left vacant in January 2014 when Dr. Alison Morrison-Shetlar was appointed provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at Western Carolina University. [youtube=https://youtu.be/uVWLKFoKRsw&noredirect=1&w=560&h=315] Dr. Paul Miller, a co-chair on the search committee for the new dean, said they are looking for someone who strives to produce success within the college. "We hope to really identify somebody who has the vision to continue a trajectory of excellence at Elon and at the same time somebody who can make sound hiring decisions, can be directly involved in faculty development, to help people continue to develop as lifelong learners and as scholars, teachers, and university leaders," Miller said. The dean for the College of Arts and Sciences oversees 19 departments, 42 different majors, and assumes the role of chief academic and administrative officer for the College of Arts and Sciences. Elon Junior and tour guide, Jenny Faig, said, while she realizes it is impossible to address each students individual concerns, the new dean should try to hear all student's voices. "I think that if there was a forum where we could all voice the specific problems we have there might be similar ones and she might be able to fix all of them with a couple simple things." Dr. Charles Irons, department chair of history and geography, says the search committee has done a great job selecting the candidates: current Interim Dean Gabie Smith, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, Scott Furlong, and Dean of Faculty at Colby College, Paul Greenwood. Irons believes the right candidate is someone who understands the significant role the college plays for every Elon student. "Arts and sciences is and should be the center of the Elon experience and every student regardless of their major or even their school needs to take a majority of courses in the College of Arts and Sciences.

Elonthon hosts pickleball tournament to support Duke Children’s Hospital

Elonthon hosted its semesterly pickleball tournament in Elon’s South Campus Gym on Feb. 28. The event was more than just a competition — it also supported a larger cause. Elonthon operates under the motto “Kids Can’t Wait.” The organization hosts events throughout the year to raise money for the Children’s Miracle Network in partnership with Duke Children’s Hospital.

GLC, CREDE host annual Kiki Ball

Late Night Elon collaborated with the Gender & LGBTQIA Center to host the annual Kiki Ball celebration. Inspired by LGBTQIA ballroom culture, the event is historically centered around queer and trans people of color and serves as a way to honor diversity in expression within LGBTQIA communities. The evening featured music, a stage, and a panel of judges, including an Elon alum, David Carter, who was excited to see the event come together.
