Ask an Alum: The adventures of working abroad

This piece is the fifth in a series of “Ask an Alum” columns that will be periodically published online through a partnership between Elon University’s Young Alumni Council and The Pendulum. I was twenty-two years old, a top business student with a list of job offers and in love with a “good guy with a good career.”  But my heart was calling for me from Asia. With one major in international business and a second in Asian/Pacific studies, I inherently knew a career abroad was on my path, but I didn’t know when.

Stop Hunger Now

More than 250 students, alumni, and families, spent the Saturday morning of Homecoming Weekend in a gym: but they weren't playing basketball. On homecoming weekend, volunteers could have slept or tailgated, but they instead chose to feed the hungry. Forty-eight thousand.

He may be an Admiral, but to those in the room, he's still "Shortney." Admiral William Gortney of Elon's Class of 1977 was in Burlington Saturday where he received his fraternity Kappa Sigma 2013

Elon men's soccer wins thriller on penalty kicks in SoCon quarterfinals

Elon University men’s soccer head coach Darren Powell could barely watch. As senior defenseman Nick Butterly walked toward the penalty spot, Powell paced up and down the sideline muttering encouragement as his bench players stood a few feet away, arms around eachother’s shoulders. “I just wanted to be part of the action,” Powell said.

Volleyball can’t handle Terriers and Paladins in road rematches

On Friday and Saturday Nov. 8 and 9, the Elon University volleyball team played its final road games of the regular season and fell to Wofford College 3-1 (25-22, 20-25, 25-23, 25-20) and Furman University 3-1 (22-25, 25-16, 25-16, 25-19). The Phoenix are now 7-7 in Southern Conference play, and fifth in the conference standings. In the first set against the Terriers, Wofford tied the game at 8-all after a kill by senior middle blocker Wendy Burnett.
