Different vibes in air as Elon and Duke meet again

When the Elon University football team last traveled to Durham in 2010 to take on Duke University, the Phoenix faced a struggling program that was coming off a 5-7 season, which at the time was its highest win total since 1994. In five days, the Phoenix will return to Durham, but both programs are now in a different era.  Duke is coming off a 10-4 campaign in 2013, the first 10-win season in program history.

Elon football receives five 2015 verbal commitments

The Elon University football team has received five verbal commitments from the class of 2015. The coaching staff couldn’t be more ecstatic. Coaches filled Twitter with phrases like “Phoenix on the Way” and “Embrace the Grind” emblazoned in capital letters which seem to be in reference to various players committing.

Phoenix football begins spring practice

“Atlanta! Atlanta! Go!” The snap count of Elon University football junior quarterback Mike Quinn rings through the air of the Hunt and Tucker practice fields on a Monday afternoon. At Elon, spring football in 2014 takes on extra significance thanks to the offseason coaching change from former head coach Jason Swepson to new leader Rich Skrosky. Elon opened spring practice March 31 with the first session on the practice fields.

Spring practices begin for Skrosky, Elon football team

The Rich Skrosky era began Monday afternoon as players and coaches of the Elon football team began spring practice at Tucker Field. Since taking the job in December 2013, Skrosky made it his mission to rebuild and revitalize a football program that has won a total of 10 games over the last three seasons. "I think the enthusiasm level and the running around and the effort was pretty good today," Skrosky said. One of those players who showed a lot of enthusiasm was red-shirt junior quarterback, Mike Quinn. "With every team comes some jitters you have to get out in the first practice," Quinn said.

Two months in, Skrosky preaching 'process' in changing Elon football

Elon University head football coach Rich Skrosky uttered the phrase “Embrace the Grind” at his first press conference on the job. Since taking over in December, Skrosky has faced a grind of his own to begin the overhaul of the Phoenix program, which now uses that same phrase as its mantra. Having spent a little more than two months at the helm, Skrosky has worked his way through three major tasks that awaited him upon his arrival. First, with Elon being his first head coaching job in more than 20 years, Skrosky assembled a staff of assistant coaches.

Skrosky adds 13 to Elon football on Signing Day

Wednesday, Feb. 5 marked the 2014 edition of one of college football’s most hyped offseason events: National Signing Day. The day marks the first day current high school seniors are permitted to sign their national letter of intent (NLI) to play college football.

Elon University’s Clohan Dining Hall closed until further notice

Clohan Dining Hall is closed until further notice, according to an E-Alert. According to an Elon campus police officer on scene, there is no immediate danger, Elon campus police officer on the scene said. Campus police declined to comment further on the situation. Multiple fire trucks and police cars were seen at Clohan around 3:30 p.m., along with a maintenance worker from piedmont natural gas, who was equipped with a gas leak detector.

National foreign language enrollment declines at collegiate level

Hallo! Bonjour! Hola! Ciao! According to the American Councils for International Education, 10.6 million students from grades K-12 are enrolled in a foreign language. A new study has shown that although many have learned languages in their early education, there is a decline in the pursuit of learning a language in college. According to the Modern Language Association 2023 Census, there was a 16.6% decrease in enrollment in foreign language classes by college students from 2016 to 2021. This is the largest decline since the association started its census in 1958 with language enrollment peaking in 2009.
