With less than a week until the first game of the season, the Elon University football team wrapped up its final scrimmage of preseason camp Aug. 23.

Head coach Rich Skrosky described the scrimmage as a “situational night” in which the team worked on all aspects of the game, even the most rare of situations.

“The goal of the night is really to try to expose the players to every situation that might take place,” Skrosky said.  “There might be cases where we don’t see a situation that we did tonight in four years.

“But we want to cover it, and it’s all about preparation, this way when they get into a game, you hope they have the mentality that we’ve done whatever the situation may be. For the first time doing this night, we had [the players] locked in for an hour and a half, and that was pretty good to see.”

Earlier this week, Skrosky named senior Mike Quinn as the team’s starting quarterback, the second straight year Quinn has won the job.  Sophomore John Loughery will serve as Quinn’s backup, while freshman Connor Christiansen is third on the depth chart.

“There has to be a rhythm to your offense, and the conductor is the quarterback, so getting him all the reps with the ones for the last week has helped [Quinn] a lot,” said Skrosky.  “I think he’s a lot more comfortable in the system.  He’s not were we want him to be at this point in time, but the goal is we’ll keep getting better every week.”

The upcoming week marks the first game week of the 2014 season for Elon football.  The Phoenix will hold its final practice of preseason camp Sunday before a mandatory day off Monday. The team will be back on the practice field Tuesday and Wednesday, while Thursday will be another situational day.  The Phoenix will then travel to Durham Friday for a walk-through before Saturday’s 6 p.m. kickoff at Wallace Wade Stadium.
