Women's lacrosse ready to make noise in CAA
With the first recruiting class of the Elon University women’s lacrosse team reaching its senior season, head coach Josh Hexter does think about the final go-round on occasion.

The Elon University football team’s schedule for the 2017 season was released Wednesday, Feb. 1. The Phoenix will play the same eight Colonial Athletic Association teams it played last year, with the locations flipped from 2016.
When Elon University head men’s basketball coach Matt Matheny was recruiting sophomore forward Tyler Seibring, Matheny felt confident that he had a found a quality player for the basketball program. “When we saw him in the recruiting process, he’s exactly what we want in the system,” Matheny said. And now, firmly entrenched in second season through the Colonial Athletic Association, Seibring is blossoming into Elon’s best all-around player, leading the team in points, rebounds, blocks and minutes played. And, for Matheny, Seibring’s been a perfect fit at Elon, able to contribute in every facet of the game from the moment he stepped on campus. “He fits so well with his ability to pass — everybody can see he can shoot, but he can pass with his right hand, he can pass with his left hand,” Matheny said.
With the game tied with less than three minutes to go, the Elon University men’s basketball team turned to sophomore guard Dainan Swoope, who scored 10-straight points for the Phoenix to catapult Elon to a 71-62 win over the College of William & Mary Saturday night in Alumni Gym. And, for head coach Matt Matheny, the team’s response to a 22-point first half — the lowest scoring half Elon has had this season — was the biggest takeaway from the night. “For our guys to go through what was a jagged, rough first half and to come out and start the second half the way that they did, and then to defend for 40 minutes against what I think is a very good offensive team, makes me as a coach proud of how hard they’re working and how well we played tonight,” Matheny said.
No matter how hard Elon University tried to keep the influence of North Carolina’s House Bill 2 off of its campus, the controversial bill has created yet another problem for Elon. And this time, it’s with the football team.
The Elon University women's basketball team found itself in another close battle with James Madison University, but unlike in its nine previous games, the Phoenix couldn't pull it out, falling 76-70 Friday night in front of a record crowd in Alumni Gym.
Led by a career-high 25 points from sophomore forward Tyler Seibring, the Elon University men’s basketball team routed Drexel University 93-73 Thursday night in Alumni Gym. Head coach Matt Matheny felt it was one of Elon’s better all-around performances of the season, as the Phoenix held Drexel to 38.6 percent shooting, outrebounded the Dragons 38-33 and only needed 10 3-pointers to get to 93 points. “It could be one of our best 40-minute performances, and in a lot of ways, I think it is,” Matheny said.
It would be forgivable if junior guard Shay Burnett and the Elon University women’s basketball team showed off a little bit of their confidence right about now. The Phoenix has won nine straight games — a program record for the Division I era and the longest winning streak since 1981-1982 — and currently sits alone atop the Colonial Athletic Association standings, holding a perfect 5-0 conference record and a 13-4 record overall. But Burnett is following the direction of her head coach, Charlotte Smith, and trying to keep the displays of confidence to a minimum on the court.
The phone in Curt Cignetti’s office was ringing regularly once the Indiana University of Pennsylvania football team’s season ended. The sixth-year coach was content with the Crimson Hawks, seeing a future with at least 10 wins a season for the next two years. So he graciously declined each request, taking the time to answer the call but never giving what the person on the other end wanted. But in late December, Cignetti got a call from Elon University.
Some students may use Feb. 18 as a sleepy Saturday, but one Elon University alumna will be racing in honor of a lost role model.
In assessing the Elon University men's basketball team's performance through six Colonial Athletic Association, coach Matt Matheny has looked past the statistical strides and been pleased with the way the Phoenix has approached games.
Even after the Elon University women’s basketball team won its ninth straight game, a 75-65 victory over Drexel University Sunday afternoon, junior guard Shay Burnett still saw a goal Elon didn’t achieve. “They shot 40.4-percent,” Burnett said.
HARRISONBURG, Va. — After a 3-point shooting display in the first half, the Elon University men's basketball team struggled against James Madison University's press in the second half of a 60-59 loss on Saturday afternoon.
HARRISONBURG, Va. — The set-up was what the Elon University men's basketball team wanted, after a 3-point shooting parade and enough defensive stops gave the Phoenix the ball, down one, with a chance to win. The shot didn't fall.
It was clear early on that the Elon University men's basketball team was well rested. The Phoenix delivered its best shooting performance of the season and its highest scoring output in three seasons in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) as it romped past Hofstra University 96-80 on Thursday night at Alumni Gym. Sophomore guard Steven Santa Ana stayed hot, pouring in 29 points on 11 of 16 shooting, while sophomore forward Tyler Seibring scored 22 points and sophomore guard Dainan Swoope supplied 18. The victory comes after four days off for the Phoenix, which played four games in eight nights culminating with a Jan. 7 victory over Towson University.
While most Elon University students were outside enjoying the eight inches of snow Saturday afternoon, the women's basketball team was stuck on a plane. What should've been a simple, hour-long flight from Philadelphia to Raleigh-Durham International Airport turned into a 12-hour process from the time the team left its hotel to when it arrived back on campus, making the day between Colonial Athletic Association games just a tad more stressful than usual.
As sophomore forward Karolis Kundrotas scored on four consecutive possessions, he slowly felt a weight lifted and a sense of relief coming upon him. Kundrotas provided the nine-point burst that turned the tides in favor of the Elon University men’s basketball team, powering the Phoenix to a 72-61 victory against Towson University on Saturday night at Alumni Gym as it snapped a three-game losing skid in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) action. The start wasn’t ideal — Elon missed its first nine from the field — but Kundrotas helped spark a promising result against a stifling Towson defense that’s given Elon fits in past years. In fact, in each of the last two years, Elon’s worst shooting performance of the season came against Towson.
The Elon University football team introduced Curt Cignetti as its 22nd head coach in program history Monday afternoon at a press conference. Cignetti, former coach at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, made it clear that he was content to stay at IUP despite other offers from FCS schools, but once he visited Elon, his “mindset had totally changed in terms of what I wanted to do.” “I really wasn't looking to make a move,” Cignetti said.
The Elon University football team has hired Curt Cignetti as the 22nd head coach in the school’s history. “I am excited about the great opportunity at Elon and humbled and honored to be chosen to lead the Phoenix football program,” Cignetti said.
GREENSBORO — Duke University junior guard Grayson Allen didn't burry too many shots on Wednesday, but he did plunge his head into a Gatorade towel. After a season last year that involved tripping two opponents, the Blue Devil has gone on record saying he wants to brighten his image, which has been marred with a dirty player stereotype. The exact opposite happened against Elon University.
