Pride remains for women's basketball despite 1st round loss

COLLEGE PARK, Md. — When senior guard Essence Baucom fouled out of the Elon University women’s basketball team’s first game in the NCAA Tournament in school history, head coach Charlotte Smith stopped her as she went to the bench. With Baucom tearing up, Smith opened her arms and pulled her point guard and star defender in for a hug, an embrace that concluded Baucom’s time in an Elon uniform. The 11th-seeded Phoenix lost 75-62 to sixth-seeded West Virginia University March 17 in College Park, Maryland, ending its best season in the Division I era in the first round of the Big Dance.

Defense, rebounding propelling Elon to Big Dance

Head coach Charlotte Smith has been telling the Elon University women’s basketball team the keys to success so often, she knew the team would get sick of it. But in Smith’s eyes, defending well and cleaning up as many rebounds as possible are too important to ever let the team forget. “You have to set goals, and it has to be something that’s on the forefront of their minds,” Smith said.

Reeves ready to maximize ‘truly talented’ Elon

It’s fair to say that neither Marc Reeves nor the Elon University men’s soccer team expected to be in this situation. Reeves had been enjoying a run of success never before seen at Radford University, winning three straight Big South Conference regular season championships and making back-to-back NCAA Tournaments. Meanwhile, Elon finished in the top four of the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) for the third time in its three years in the CAA. With the entire starting lineup returning, former head coach Chris Little’s bunch seemed to have sights set high.

In what could be her final game in Alumni Gym, Rhodes had tied her career-high with 21 points, leading Elon to a 82-48 win over the University of North Carolina at Wilmington March 1 and, with it, the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) regular season title.
