In its final home game of the 2022-23 season, the Elon University women’s basketball team defeated the University of North Carolina Wilmington 52-42. A back and forth battle for the Phoenix, with a small comeback by UNCW, ended in an emotional night for the seniors and graduate students as they left the court at Schar Center one final time. Graduate student guard Lenaejha Evans came to Elon for her final college season after playing for two seasons at Rider University. She said stepping off of the court was bittersweet.
The Elon University softball team struggled on Wednesday night against East Carolina, allowing 15 baserunners and tallying just three hits in a 5-1 loss against the Pirates.
After a perfect first inning by both junior right-handed pitcher Ben Sieracki and UNCG junior right-handed pitcher Caleb Cozart, the Phoenix earned runners on first and second in the top of the second, but a pair of strikeouts — one looking and one swinging — quieted its scoring threat. In the bottom of the inning, UNCG junior right fielder and cleanup hitter Dosi Jonas piped a ball to the right-center warning track, reaching second standing up. One groundout later, a sacrifice fly by UNCG junior first baseman GC Jarman gave the Spartans the early 1-0 advantage.

Elon, who came into Saturday’s game with its first round Colonial Athletic Association Tournament matchup already locked in against William & Mary, did not have much to play for with regard to standings.

The Elon University track and field team scored in all 18 events to win the first-ever Colonial Athletic Association indoor team championship on Thursday. The Phoenix tallied 129.83 points to edge runner-up Hampton, who scored 121.33 points. Sophomore distance runner Jette Beermann won Elon’s lone gold medal with a victory in the mile race.
Throughout her four years as a member of the Elon University softball team, Rebecca Murray was known for her signature speed. After a leadoff single, Murray, now the starting center fielder for North Carolina State University, had her eyes on second base.
Of all of the athletes within the Elon University track and field team, one name has continued to stand out: sophomore sprinter and jumper Meghan Wilcox. In 2022, she was the Colonial Athletic Association champion in the 4x400 meter relay, all-CAA in the 100-meters and all-CAA in the 4x100 meter relay. Her success has only continued throughout the start of the 2023 season, similar to the success the team as a whole has achieved.
As the fight song faded, the players turned their attention to head coach Kathy Bocock. The team shot off confetti as the players surrounded Bocock, who became Elon softball’s all-time winningest head coach on Sunday with her 278th career victory, to honor her achievement.
On Sunday afternoon, the Elon University women’s basketball team fell short to the Charleston Cougars on Play4Kay and Senior Day at Schar Center. After trailing by as many as 18 points late in the third quarter, it looked like Elon might finish off an improbable comeback. But the Phoenix never regained a lead after the first quarter, and it fell 60-58.
The Elon University baseball team was unable to break the tie in its weekend series against the University of Kentucky, as the Phoenix fell 4-0 to the Wildcats in the last game of the series on Sunday. After a 2-0 shutout win Feb. 17, the Phoenix couldn’t keep the momentum going through the weekend. The Wildcats turned the tables on the Phoenix and went on to win Feb. 18 5-1.
The Elon University baseball team left with unfinished business against Southeastern Conference opponent University of Kentucky in the second game of the three game weekend series Saturday, losing 5-1. After being shutout 2-0 by the Phoenix on Feb. 17, Kentucky wasted no time ending the drought, as sophomore left fielder Ryan Waldschmidt smashed a lead off double off the left field fence.
The Elon Softball Phoenix Invitational rolled on Saturday when the Elon University softball team faced off against St. Francis University on Saturday, Feb.18. Despite a late run by the Red Flash, the Phoenix held on by a final score of 4-3, and were able to pick up its second victory in the tournament. Head coach Kathy Bocock said she was happy the team could add another mark in the win column, but said there was still a lot of room for improvement.
Despite a tremendous defensive effort, Elon University women’s lacrosse team lost to Virginia Commonwealth University 9-8 in overtime. Freshman midfielder Anna Hackett opened up the scoring for the Phoenix with a goal within the opening minute. The Rams followed up with a 3-0 run led by two goals from senior attacker Juliana George.
