Teach for America the quick fix, not the solution

It’s no secret by now that changes are happening in the North Carolina education system. As part of a sweeping overhaul of public schools across the state, North Carolina teachers have seen their benefits slashed, numbers reduced and a whopping $500 million drained from the public education budget. In the last few months, 2,800 jobs have been cut from education, 850 of which were teaching positions.

Local Elon businesses struggle during summer months

Town Table and Taphouse served their last meals and poured their last beers at the end of this summer, leaving many to question the viability of doing business in downtown Elon at a time when the area’s most consistent customers — Elon University students — leave campus deserted. But many businesses are still going strong, supported in part from May to late August by a robust community customer base. “We’re just busy all the time, even in the summer months,” said Sandie Broom, a manager at The Root Trackside.

Conservators’ Center holds obstacle 5K for the wild at heart

'Break the Night' wins Sprite Films Contest

The results for the 2013 Sprite Films nationwide film competition are in and Elon University alum Dean Coots’ submission, titled “Break the Night,” won both the Green Ribbon Panel Award and Fan Favorite Award, making it the first double winner in the program's history, Sprite Films announced today. After winning the Green Ribbon Panel Award, senior Dean Coots — the film's director — will receive a $30,000 contract job to work alongside Sprite and The Coca-Cola Company brand executives to develop content.

Graham Man Charged With Killing Elon Woman

A Graham man is facing second degree murder charges for a fatal wreck in June on the intersection of University Drive and Manning Avenue. William Scott, 36, is also charged with Felony and Misdemeanor Death by Motor Vehicle and Second Degree Murder. Elon Police say Scott was driving a 2013 Jeep Wrangler when he collided with Veocia Warren, 63 of Elon, in her 2003 Chevrolet Impala. Warren died as a result of the collision. According to the Elon Police, Scott's blood alcohol content during the accident was .22. Scott is being held in Alamance County jail on $225,000 bail.

North Carolinians rate public schools poorly in new Elon Poll

As K-12 students across North Carolina prepare for their winter break, the Elon University Poll released poll data on Dec. 17 finding that most North Carolinians gave mediocre or poor grades to public schools across the state. “The states have always had deep authority on education, but there has been more federal involvement in various years,” Director of the Elon University Poll Jason Husser said. “So we thought, well, this is the time for us to really look in depth about what do people think about North Carolina schools.”

Grief, loss support group provides comfort for Elon faculty, staff

Elon University associate chaplain Rev. Julie Tonnesen said loss and grief are universal emotions, but found that they can be difficult for faculty and staff to process while continuing their usual routines. “Even when we show up to work, that doesn’t mean that we get to put the rest of our lives on the back burner,” Tonnesen said. “Our grief comes with us. It’s not something we can just keep on a shelf at home.” In collaboration with Counseling Services, the Truitt Center for Religious and Spiritual Life, began offering a monthly group for faculty and staff to support those affected by loss.
