Elon Eats: Prego's offers tasty pasta and smiling faces

            Only minutes from Elon’s campus, Prego’s Trattoria offers traditional Italian fare at prices fit for college students wanting a step above dining hall cuisine.             Opened 11 years ago by Ecuadorian native, Vincento Hernandez, the restaurant is situated right across the street from Harris Teeter at 2740 South Church Street.

Elon Eats: Mixed Rice offers more than authentic Korean cuisine

A framed picture of five Elon University students in familiar maroon caps and gowns sits at the payment counter at Mixed Rice, a restaurant wedged between NC Jelly Donuts and Painted Grape: Craft & Paint studio in Stans Plaza on South Church Street, Burlington. One of the students in the picture, Meredith Carey ’15, said she and her roommates gifted the frame to the restaurant to thank them for the sense of home they provided at every visit.

Alumna publishes book about the comedy in motherhood

DeeDee Filiatreault has spent her career “writing words for other people,” but with the publishing of her first book of essays, the spotlight is on her. Filiatreault graduated Elon in 1993 after serving as the Editor in Chief of The Pendulum. At the time the organization consisted of a few students and a wax machine. “When I became editor, everyone took a step back and I was the one standing there,” Filiatreault said.

Annual Pumpkin festival brings in autumn

October has blown past, and the season of autumn has arrived. The time has come for pumpkins, cider and the changing of leaves. On Friday, the Garden Club hosted its annual pumpkin festival, bringing many of Elon’s students together. Everyone enjoyed the festivities, whether it was pumpkin carving, decorating cookies, or playing composting games.

Students film biggest budgeted movie in Elon’s history over Fall Break

Over the span of nine days, 37 Elon University students were running around with cameras, props and actors, spending around 13 hours a day filming “Providence,” a short film written and directed by senior Kenner Clark. Taking place in a rural college town in North Carolina, “Providence” follows four characters that become entangled in a crime of passion and how a deteriorating relationship reaches its breaking point in 36 hours.

Film series to help educate community on difficult issues

Through their partnership with Crossroads, an Elon class is helping to educate the Burlington community on important issues through film. Crossroads is a sexual assault response and resource center and child advocacy center that was established 40 years ago.  With offices only minutes away from campus, Crossroads provides a 24/7 crisis hotline as well as trained advocates for victims of sexual assault. “That’s where we provide really valuable services,” said Julie Budd, volunteer and outreach coordinator for the center.

Elon, Eastlawn elementary school gardens act as outdoor classrooms

Tucked behind Elon and Eastlawn Elementary are over 20 plant beds growing fruits and vegetables. In the gardens, the crops are ready for the peak spring season. Created and maintained entirely by volunteers, many Elon University students are involved in the efforts that go into taking care of the space. Both gardens work with the North Carolina School Garden Network, which connects schools from across the state with resources to build their own gardens. Elon Professor Scott Morrison is a founding member of the network and sees the gardens as extensions of the classroom.

Entrepreneurship group pitches digital Phoenix Cards

Freshman Ethan Shapiro, junior Brody Hender and sophomore Caitlin Price decided to pitch to their Entrepreneurship class the idea of turning Phoenix Cards digital. The cards would be held in the digital wallet of phones but would retain their functionality. While the project is only for class, the group hopes to pitch the idea to Elon University and possibly digitalize Phoenix Cards. Shapiro said he and his group got the idea from the concept of digital credit cards and would function in the same manner. Phoenix Cards allow students access to phoenix cash, meal plans, dorms and other services.
