Former Elon Student Died Monday

A former Elon University student passed away Monday, according to an email from Dr. Smith Jackson, Vice President for Student Life. Melanie Manley, who was last enrolled at Elon in the fall, passed away at Alamance County Medical Center accompanied by her family and fiance.

Former Elon student dies at Alamance Regional Medical Center

Melanie Manley, a former Elon University student, passed away yesterday at Alamance Regional Medical Center. Manley was most recently enrolled at Elon in the fall, and she suffered from frequent medical problems during her time as a student, according to an email sent by Smith Jackson, vice president and dean of Student Life. According to the email, she wanted to return to her studies this summer.

Drunk Driving in College

A study from the University of Maryland suggests that 1 out of 5 college students admits to driving after drinking alcohol and 40% of college students admit to getting in the car with an intoxicated driver. This past week I spoke to one student about his experiences with drunk driving on campus.

Adventures in Asheville

While some Elon students just got back from a weekend in Asheville where they rooted on the men and women's basketball teams, there's more to Asheville than watching basketball. The Carnival is in Town

The carnival is in town. The Powers Great American Midways opened its season last week at the intersection of North Church Street and Graham-Hopedale Road. The carnival has more than two dozen family friendly rides, games like ring toss where you try to win a prize and the classic food stands. Marc Janas, who is the Public Relations Director for Powers Great American Midways, said all the lights, rides and food are in Burlington to create some fun for local families. "Everybody has a good time and gets to have a good community celebration," Janas said.

Gone fishin': Students pursue passion through collegiate angling

There is always water to be found for the dedicated angler, landlocked as some areas of the world appear to be. Whether in actuality or in the mind’s eye, fishermen have a curious way of always leaving part of themselves beside the ocean, on a lakeshore or on the bank of a mountain stream. Such is the case for members of the Elon University Fishing Club. Founded in January 2012, the Elon Fishing Club operates with the purpose of encouraging “sportsmanship, integrity, conservation and development of the skills and knowledge needed to be successful anglers by competing with other schools in College Fishing tournaments,” according to the club’s mission statement. “The club provides an opportunity for students who love to fish to get together, and it allows students an opportunity to compete in college fishing tournaments,” said junior Billy Gilbert, founder and club president. Club members compete in regional and national fishing contests, representing Elon at up to five collegiate bass fishing tournaments per semester. This semester, the club plans to participate in the upcoming Bass Anglers Sportsman Society (B.A.S.S.) Super East Regional tournament in Charlotte, in addition to two club-sanctioned tournaments held on area lakes. The club placed ninth out of 53 boats at the Forrest L.

Elon University sees registration for Scholarship Weekend increase

Elon University’s Scholarship Weekend is expected to see 1,143 applicants on campus, with 130 interviewing virtually, for the Fellows programs, Accelerated programs and the 3+1 Dual Degree program. According to Vice President for Enrollment Greg Zaiser, registration is approximately 30% higher than last year.

City council leads new projects across Graham

Now two months into her city council term, Graham’s new mayor Chelsea Dickey has begun leading several projects and initiatives across the city. Dickey has focused on setting goals for the remainder of her term with support from the council. In a Facebook post on Jan. 20, she announced the completion of a workshop with fellow council members where they outlined priorities for the upcoming budget cycle. During the workshop the council created their three-year goals including continuing to support parks and recreation initiatives, promoting economic growth in Graham, maintaining infrastructure, improving safety, and strengthening community engagement.
