Men's soccer battles Duke to scoreless draw, earns SoCon regular season championship

After 120 minutes of hard-fought soccer, the Elon University men’s soccer team was unable to put the ball in the back of the net, ending the game with a scoreless draw against the defensive-minded Duke University Blue Devils, a strong team from the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Phoenix came into the game riding a three game winning streak, including a win over fellow ACC foe Wake Forest University; the fourth ranked team the Phoenix has beaten this season. This game, however, was a game with a different style of play against a defensive-minded Duke team, a back line that goalkeeper Nathan Dean believes is one of the best in the nation. “They showed today how strong they can be in the back,” Dean said.

Settled in after three years, Matheny’s push to ‘Elevate Elon’ continues

Matt Matheny, Elon University men’s basketball head coach grabbed the microphone before the small assembled crowd at the Phoenix Preview, a pair of scrimmages featuring both Phoenix basketball teams, and took center court, calling all to attention. He began by introducing Charlotte Smith, the women’s head coach, as the “best” women’s coach in the country.

Extracurricular Winter Term courses return to Elon for sixth year

Melissa Martlock, now a sophomore, inherited the role of both teacher and student during last Winter Term when she taught a crochet class as part of the Burst the Bubble program. The Burst the Bubble program is returning to Elon University, providing students with the chance to teach a course during Winter Term. Burst the Bubble programs are relaxed, free and student-led, according to Evan Heiser, assistant to the vice president of student life.

Pro Bono Week introduces law students to local legal associations, attorneys

Elon University’s School of Law’s first annual Pro Bono Week presents students and Greensboro community members opportunities to meet professionals who provide free legal work to the community. The American Bar Association developed the program several years ago as a time to celebrate different professions in the field, according to Alexis Martinez, assistant dean of Student Affairs.  Pro Bono week is celebrated nationally. “The week highlights different ways of social justice around Greensboro and around the country and also identifies gaps in legal terms,” Martinez said.

A relaxer (or commonly referred to as a perm) chemically straightens the hair. It comes with a creme and an activator which is applied to coarse textured hair to loosen the strands and make it look straight. Sophomore Aviya Payne has been getting a relaxer in her hair since she was 10.

Imam blasts misconceptions about Islam at Real Talk session

No question was off-limits to those gathered in Moseley Center’s Oak Room for “Some Real Talk with the Imam,” which invited members of the Elon community to receive clarification on common misconceptions about Islam. The event, hosted by Better Together, also offered a space for students to learn about the history and theology of the religion from Imam Abdullah Antepli, Muslim chaplain at Duke University. “It is the social homework of Americans to understand Islam as a religion and to understand Muslims as people,” Antepli said. A panel of four Elon University faculty and staff members came together Monday night in the Isabella Cannon Room to discuss the traditions and experiences that have shaped their understandings of Christianity. “For Christians, our point of view is formed by how we use and interpret the bible,” said associate chaplain Jan Fuller in her opening address.

‘We've forgotten about the conversation’: HIV/AIDS still hits the South as awareness fades

45 years after the first reported cases of HIV/AIDS in the U.S., the fight against this disease is far from over, especially in the South. According to the most recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the South accounted for 52% of all HIV diagnoses in the U.S. in 2023. "We know that HIV/AIDS has had a disproportionate effect on people of color or queer people of color in this country," Professor of communication studies at Vanderbilt University Jeff Bennett said. "You have many people living in rural areas. You might have distrust of medical providers, you have the social stigma.”
