Team Canada has been the top dog in Olympic hockey in recent years, having won the gold medal in two of the past three Olympic Games. Most recently, Team Canada knocked off Team USA to win gold in a thrilling overtime victory in 2010. As the 2014 Winter Olympics near, it seems as though Team USA is poised for another second place finish. This year’s Team USA squad consists of a solid core of players in Patrick Kane, Ryan Kesler and Phil Kessel. Jimmy Howard, Ryan Miller and Jonathan Quick will mind the net, giving Team USA three solid options in goal. The team is tremendously talented, but is still lagging behind Team Canada when it comes to overall roster talent. Of course, topping Team Canada is no easy task. After all, hockey originated in Canada and has long been a hotbed of National Hockey League talent. This year’s team, as usual, is reminiscent of an All-Star team. Sidney Crosby and Jonathan Toews lead a roster that is full of goal-scorers. From Patrice Bergeron to Rick Nash to Patrick Sharp and Corey Perry, this team can flat-out put the puck in the back of the net. They are so stacked that veterans such as Eric Staal, Joe Thornton and Claude Giroux were left off of the team. There are simply too many talented Canadian players to find a place on the team for everyone. Team USA, the second most talented team in the world behind Team Canada, does not have this luxury. They need their most talented and experienced players on the ice in order to take home the gold, but this is not what they are doing. Team USA will bring a very inexperienced and young team to compete in Sochi, Russia, especially on the blue line. Brooks Orpik and Ryan Suter are the only two returning defensemen from the 2010 Olympic team. Newcomers John Carlson, Justin Faulk, Cam Fowler, Paul Martin, Ryan McDonagh and Kevin Shattenkirk will join Orpik and Suter to form a very young defensive core with little Olympic experience. Jack Johnson of the Columbus Blue Jackets is the most notable defensive snub for Team USA. Johnson, who played for Team USA during the 2010 games in Vancouver, provides a physical presence that the younger defensemen will not be able to match. In addition to Johnson, winger Bobby Ryan, of the Ottawa Senators, was another player that was surprisingly left off of the American team. At 26, would Ryan not be a better choice than, say, Max Pacioretty, who has no prior Olympic experience? The answer is yes. Pacioretty is a talented player, but Ryan is a proven goal-scoring threat that Team USA will need on the ice. Team USA has not won a gold medal in hockey at the Winter Olympics since 1980, when the “Miracle on Ice” team stunned a U.S.S.R.

It won’t be the first Friday game at Duke’s Koskinen Stadium for Elon University women’s lacrosse coaches Josh Hexter and Virginia Crotty. But this time they won’t be leading the Blue Devils onto the field, they’ll be making history on the opposing team’s bench with the Phoenix. Elon will be playing in its first ever game on the women’s lacrosse field, coming less than a year after the university announced that the sport would be added to its varsity lineup. Josh Hexter took the head coaching position with the Phoenix after eight very successful seasons on the Blue Devils coaching staff.
Spring semester began just a few days ago, but Elon administrators continue to plan for commencement events this upcoming May.
ELON – It wasn’t the prettiest of games, but Elon University found a way to win. In a poor shooting night for both teams, the Phoenix had to rely on its defense to seal what became a 72-66 victory over the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Elon made just 2 of 20 three-point attempts and none in the second half, finishing the night at a 40.3 percent clip (25 of 62) from the field.
Fans roared as Luther Vandross’ “One Shining Moment,” the unofficial anthem of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, blared over the speakers of Elon University’s Alumni Gym. Amidst the hubbub, Elon men’s basketball head coach Matt Matheny and his staff emerged from the corner of the gym.

We’ve saved the best for last. That’s right, the go-to for the answer of “what’s the most obscure Winter Olympic sport?” We’ll now dive into the obscurity that is the rock throwing, fast sweeping, shuffleboard-on-ice sport of curling. According to the official Winter Olympic website, curling was first played in Scotland during the 1500s.
When it comes to an Elon University dance show, some people may think of pieces that are both beautiful and open to interpretation.
In 2013, 90 percent of all corn, beets and soybeans planted in the United States were genetically engineered (GE) according the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). This is a 65 percent increase since 2006. According to Renée Maas from Food and Water Watch, a grassroots organization leading the campaign to get GE food labeled in North Carolina, the so-called misconception of the dangers involved in genetic engineering is a grim reality that negatively affects the health of Americans. Maas said that the impact on American health is easily seen, but not so easily confirmed. “It’s hard for doctors and scientists to link them to genetically engineered foods because they aren’t labeled,” she said.
LaTony Galloway still remembers how the cold, steel handcuffs felt on his wrists the first time he was arrested. By the time Galloway was 22, he would be in and out of prison for the next 15 years, stuck in an endless cycle with no way to escape. Welcome to the world of a past offender.
In a summer tax code overhaul, a bill stating that university meal plans and live performances would no longer be exempt from sales tax was passed by the North Carolina General Assembly. Upon returning to campus in 2014, Elon University students have taken notice of increased prices of university meal plans, which before the tax code implementation cost anywhere from $2,500-$6,274 each year.
The age-old saying goes, “defense wins championships.” After the Seattle Seahawks’ domination of the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XLVIII, we were reminded of the saying’s validity. The phrase seems to transcend sports. A deep and talented pitching staff along with a solid defense has been a recipe for success for many World Series champions. In the National Basketball Association, the Miami Heat’s suffocating defense has led them to back-to-back rings. Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh and LeBron James are all household names, but it’s their defense that often gets overlooked. Their size and speed allows for blocked shots, steals, and intercepted passes into quick and easy baskets. Their athleticism may grab headlines for spectacular dunks, but it’s their defense that shows the true nature of how athletic they really are. Even across the Atlantic Ocean in the Premier League, defense reigns supreme. Much like the Heat, who makes a living capitalizing off of turnovers and scoring in transition, Chelsea is playing championship-caliber soccer starting with its defense. After holding Manchester City scoreless at home for the first time in over two years, Chelsea is sitting in third-place, and just three points behind first-place Arsenal. Chelsea has scored the fewest goals of any team in the top four (44 through 24 games), but has conceded a league-fewest 20 goals. Coach Jose Mourinho’s team may get attention from its explosive offensive talents such as Eden Hazard, William, Oscar and Samuel Eto’o, but the Blues’ defense has carried the team for most of the season. The all-English center back pairing of John Terry and Gary Cahill has proven to be top notch. Terry has regained form after many thought he was too old to play at the highest level. His experience and leadership has truly made Cahill a better player and surly will play a big part in the England team in Brazil this summer. Dropping Ashley Cole to the bench, in favor of Cesar Azpilicueta was highly criticized at first, but now many are praising Mourinho’s decision. For Mourinho, Cole didn’t do enough in terms of defending. The left-back is always dangerous in attack, but he has lost a couple steps and was often caught out of position leaving Chelsea vulnerable at the back. Mourinho requires a lot from his players, especially on defense. Their attacking stars such as Hazard and William also shine in their defensive duties. Juan Mata, who was recently sold to Manchester United, was too one-dimensional. Mata’s playmaking ability proved to be surplus for Mourinho, instead choosing to start players who cannot only create goals, but prevent them. Mourinho even has David Luiz playing hard on defense. Luiz’s attacking style of play often has Mourinho looking for other options at center back, but the Brazilian has played well in a more advanced central defensive midfielder role.
