New presidency could shift balance of Supreme Court

With four Supreme Court justices in their 70s, some analysts are saying it's likely that the next elected president will appoint at least one justice, shifting the balance of the court. Elon Political Science Professor Dion Farganis agrees, and predicts that if President Obama is re-elected he would appoint a liberal justice and Governor Romney would do the opposite. "If Obama gets re-elected and a conservative justice retires like Scalia, that would then change the balance," Farganis said.

Political ads and campaigning for the Nov. 6 election have been ongoing for several months, but the weekend prior to the election, as well as Election Day itself, showed the hardest efforts made by both Democratic and Republican supporters in Alamance County. “The Alamance County Democratic Party has staff volunteers at all 37 voting locations to (give out) sheets that have our candidates listed on them, all the way from the president down to the local races for judges,” said Anna Gerow, vice-chair for the Alamance Country Democratic Party.

First time voters find their own voice this election

In this year's election, both Obama and Romney are battling hard to capture the youth vote, and for many of those in that demographic, this election will be their first time casting ballots. Freshman Ingrid Frahm is one of those first-time voters and said that this experience has been educational and sometimes frustrating. "I kind of get overwhelmed and give up sometimes," Frahm said.
