One day after upsetting the No. 8 University of Georgia Bulldogs, the Elon University softball team dropped both of its Saturday contests at the Red and Black Showcase tournament, hosted by the Bulldogs in Athens, Ga.

In the opener, a rematch of Friday’s upset, Georgia shut out Elon by a score of 8-0. The Bulldogs scored three in the third inning and five more in the fifth against Elon junior pitcher Karen Berna.

Elon mustered only two hits, one by senior center fielder Carleigh Nestor, and one by sophomore shortstop Aly Quintana.

In the day’s second game, the Phoenix was defeated by the Winthrop University Eagles, 4-1. Sophomore pitcher Chelsea White, who started Friday’s victory, got the start in the circle for Elon.

Winthrop scored a pair of runs on a pair of hits in the top of the first, and added two more on three errors in the second. Elon scratched out nine hits against the Eagles’ sophomore pitcher Sutton Watson, but only scored one run: Senior outfielder Tomeka Watson’s second home run in as many days.

Senior catcher Camille Hill went 3-3 in the nightcap to join Watson as Phoenix players with multiple hits.

Freshman pitcher Kayla Caruso tossed three shutout innings of relief for Elon in the losing effort.

With the losses, Elon will leave Athens at 1-3 on the young season. The Maroon and Gold has a 10-day layoff before Campbell University comes to Elon for the inaugural game at Hunt Softball Park. First pitch is set for 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 19.
