After a disappointing loss to the Wofford College Terriers that ended their seven-game winning streak, the Elon University men’s basketball team rebounded with a 64-60 win over the Furman University Paladins on Saturday, Feb. 9, to pick up win No. 16 on the season. The win not only gives them one more than last season, but it sets the all-time mark for most wins in a single season since Elon joined the Division I ranks.

The first half went back and forth with neither team able to pull away by more than three points until the 11:18 mark when the Paladins went on an 11-0 run helped in part by the Phoenix’s inability to put the ball in the basket. The run helped the Paladins out to a 23-12 lead.

Furman maintained their double-digit lead until the 2:38 mark, when a sophomore forward Ryan Winters three-pointer sparked a 5-0 Phoenix run to cut the Paladin lead to four at halftime.

The second half began with Elon going on a 7-0 run to retake the lead, 38-37, with 16:14 left in the game. The game then went back and forth again with neither team able to take control of the game.

Finally, after a pair of free throws from junior guard Jack Isenbarger and a Furman turnover, junior guard Sebastian Koch iced the game away with two free throws to give the Phoenix the 64-60 win.

Koch led a very balanced Phoenix attack with 19 points and 5 rebounds, while junior forward Ryley Beaumont added 15 and freshman guard Tanner Samson chipped in 13. Junior forward Lucas Troutman was held scoreless for the first time this season after scoring 18 points in Elon’s first meeting with the Paladins.

Furman was paced by senior forward Colin Reddick, who recorded his second double-double of the season with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Junior guard Charlie Reddick and freshman guard Stephen Croone also scored in double figures for the Paladins with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

With the win, Elon improves to 16-8 and 9-3 in the Southern Conference while the Paladins drop to 6-16 overall, 3-8 in conference. The Phoenix pushed their lead in the conference's North division to two games over second place Samford University.

Elon returns home on Valentines Day, Thursday, Feb. 14 to take on Appalachian State University. Tip is set for 7 p.m. in Alumni Gym.
