On 'Yeezus': Yeezy season is upon us

The darkly distorted passion project of producer-rapper/designer Kanye West dropped the same day as North Carolina MC J Cole’s standout sophomore LP Born Sinner and ever-evolving pop-frat weed rapper Mac Miller’s second major label release, Watching Movies with the Sound Off. Cole and Miller delighted both fans and critics alike with cinematic production, an auteur-level attention to design detail and, most importantly to many young fans, official web streams of both of the albums in their entirety a full week before their releases. Yeezus didn’t produce a single, wasn’t available for pre-order and doesn’t even have album art.

Chris Neal brings in class of 12 for 2013 women's soccer season

Isaac Newton’s Third Law of Motion states, “For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.” Little did Newton know, his law would be used for more than just science. The Elon University women’s soccer team brought the law into the world of sports with its 2013 recruiting class — one that features 12 new additions to the team as well as two transfers, both of which came from Clemson University. With numerous knee injuries, including multiple torn ACLs in 2012, the Phoenix had a lot of question marks entering the season — ones that could only be remedied by bringing in more recruits as insurance. “Initially, the recruiting class started off as a smaller class,” said Elon head coach Chris Neal.

Recent study suggests burning incense may damage lung cells

Don’t light that incense just yet — and not just because it’s against university rules to burn incense in a residence hall. A study by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Gillings School of Global Public Health found that burning incense could cause lung inflammation. Kenneth Sexton, retired research assistant professor of environmental science at UNC and co-author of the study, compared the products of incense burned in the study to those found in cigarette smoke. “We found carbon monoxide concentrations from burning incense to be many times greater than from cigarette smoke,” Sexton said.

Elon students continue use of popular pre-workout supplement Craze despite national controversy

Recently, a popular pre-workout supplement, Craze, was found to contain undisclosed, illegal, amphetamine-like compounds following a USA Today investigation. Will Steele, a sophomore at Elon University who has been working out since seventh grade, accidentally took triple the recommended dosage the first time he took pre-workout. “I felt as though I could walk through a brick wall, throw a car across a state with my bare hands and still have plenty of energy to run a marathon,” Steele said.
