Behind the B.F.A. Audition Process

Jacqueline Agrusa does not look happy. “I was nervous,” she says. “I had to go first.” Agrusa has just emerged from Yeager Recital Hall in Elon University’s Center for the Arts, where she completed the first of a three-part audition for Elon’s Bachelor of Fine Arts music theater program in the Department of Performing Arts March 2. But even though Agrusa doesn’t feel confident in her singing audition, she still has two more components to try: acting and dance.

Spring break preparation: Campus Recreation gets students ready for the beach

With Spring Break less than three weeks away, students are dreaming of sunshine, shorelines and sweet spare time. Whether or not your vacation plans involve such leisure, Campus Recreation has a program that will put you in the Spring Break spirit. The Aquatics Department of Campus Recreation organizes a program called Swim to Florida every Spring Semester to encourage physical activity and healthy habits.

Phoenix bats unable to awaken in loss to North Carolina

It’s not often that T-shirts have a Clothing Facts box that resembles the Nutrition Facts label found on a box of snacks. But TS Designs is not a normal clothing company. Based in Burlington, TS Designs has taken on a commitment to sustainability.

Dance program prepares for debut on international stage

Students in the Elon Dance Company will get a taste of professional experience later this month, performing at the Semaine de la Danse Festival in Aurillac, France. Nine dancers, accompanied by professors Lauren Kearns and Karl Green, will perform their piece, “End Games,” as well as take classes with French choreographers and other dancers. The festival will be an important opportunity for both the students and their professors, as they are representatives from the only United States university to be invited to attend the festival, according to Green. Green’s idea to broaden the experiences of the dance program derived from a trip to France last summer, when he connected with a French choreographer and discussed a possible project.

Clothing drive swaps excess for consciousness of social issues

They built their project on a simple fact. Elon students don't use nearly as much as they have. “We have these huge closets and we feel the need to fill them up to the brim, but we wear about 30 items,” said sophomore Meaghan Fabrycki, one of the coordinators of Elon University’s service learning core. This realization inspired the members of the service learning core, which constitutes the former residents of the service learning community, and residents of the service learning community to transform Oaks 212 into a thrift store Sunday, March 4. Thrift stores attract the members of the service learning community because consumers are able to buy used clothing rather than support production where unethical labor practices could have been used, Fabrycki said. Those in the service learning community included Elon students in their promotion of socially conscious consumer behavior. Elon students were able to bring their clothes and accessories to the room and exchange them for another item.

Communication, teaching tools part of Moodle’s package

A dependency on the Internet transcends generations on Elon’s campus. The transition to Moodle, a learning management system, provides faculty with a new set of online learning tools to utilize in their courses. Starting in June, Blackboard will be a platform of the past, and the university will completely switch to Moodle. “Moodle has allowed us to introduce faculty to the full capability of our instructional technologies to let them think about what they want to do in their course and then how to do that,” said Roger Gant, an academic support specialist. The moving process has taken about two years, according to Gant.
