If we apply ourselves to academics with the intention to acquire knowledge, good grades should naturally follow. But by taking the easy route now and only applying ourselves for the immediate reward, we are only enhancing the challenges we’ll face the moment we leave campus.
For years there has been a lot of conversation, both privately and publicly, about the divide of race and experiences on Elon's campus. Now, because of the results from the Presidential Task Force on Black Student, Faculty and Staff Experiences, the campus has solid data to back the claims that for a significant portion of Elon's Black students, faculty and staff, feels that Elon can be a drastically different place than their non-Black peers and colleagues. [youtube=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sY0oZeNGDHM&noredirect=1&w=560&h=315] The task force is made up of alumni, students, faculty and staff and its goal is to implement policies and practices to make Elon more supportive and inclusive of the black community. Results gave insight and recommendations to issues like safety, inclusivity and overall community interactions.
Vibrant and colorful flags were hung from over 20 tables in upstairs Lakeside on Thursday. They represented the many different countries that Elon University students have been to, and the many places Elon students will continue to study abroad.
CAMPUSPEAK’s Lori Hart ended her talk, “A Few Too Many: Our Campus Culture of Alcohol,” with one crucial piece of advice: “Use [your bowels] as any excuse to get out of an uncomfortable drug-related situation.” “Let’s be real,” Hart said, “No one has ever looked at a friend and said, ‘Stay, we’ll clean up your [expletive].’” Students filled Elon University’s Whitley Auditorium Sept.
As the 14th anniversary of September 11 came about last Friday, it can be difficult to imagine that it’s only be 14 years. Then again, it’s hard to realize it hasn’t been longer.
Though his days in office are numbered, President Obama rolled out a new piece of legislation this week during a speech in Des Moines, Iowa. In order to make it easier for prospective college students apply for financial aid, President Obama announced a series of minor amendments to the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) program. It was a play on words: the Co-Op hosted the Co-Hops and more than 300 people showed up for the event, the fourth annual Beer Festival on Saturday in downtown Burlington. "It's a lot of work, but when it actually happens, it's worth it," Megan Sharpe, the customers service manager, said. Through 84 minutes, all signs pointed to an easy victory for the Elon Women's soccer team, who were beating the University of North Carolina at Charlotte 3-0. Six minutes and a few goals later, Elon left victorious, defeating the 49ers 4-2 Friday night at Rudd Field. The Phoenix had successfully stifled the Charlotte attack for most of the match, scoring a goal in the first half and tacking on two more before the onslaught of goals to end the match.
When my daughter was small and angry with me, she called me the Mean Mean Monkey Queen (Thank you, “The Wizard of Oz”), so I thought that if I ever had a grammar column or blog, I’d use the name Mean Mean Grammar Queen, since having taught grammar, linguistics and writing for four decades probably qualifies me for that title.
The Emmys are here, and the queen of television is demanding that actresses be asked better questions.
While the Elon University football team lost the lead late in the fourth quarter, they’ll be looking back at the first half for an abundance of missed scoring chances against North Carolina A&T State University. Elon started its first five drives from its own 47 yard line, NC A&T’s 45 and its own 46, 45 and 40 yard lines. While the Phoenix reached Aggie territory in four of those five drives, it came away with no points. “We had a couple missed opportunities in the first half,” said head coach Rich Skrosky. You could say that again.
