Elon University women’s basketball ends home season on a high note

In its final home game of the 2022-23 season, the Elon University women’s basketball team defeated the University of North Carolina Wilmington 52-42. A back and forth battle for the Phoenix, with a small comeback by UNCW, ended in an emotional night for the seniors and graduate students as they left the court at Schar Center one final time. Graduate student guard Lenaejha Evans came to Elon for her final college season after playing for two seasons at Rider University. She said stepping off of the court was bittersweet.

Elon University’s Spring Dance Concert features six choreographed pieces by Elon dance faculty in collaboration with students and guest choreographer Ming-Lung Yang from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. The concert is set for March 3 and 4 at 7:30 p.m. and March 4 and 5 at 2 p.m. in McCrary Theatre.

Non-traditional Elon University nursing student pushes for older aged students to attend university, help others

As soon as  Eric Mulford graduated high school, he received his EMT certification. Shortly after that, he became a firefighter paramedic. Twenty two years later, he decided to attend nursing school at Elon University. Sophomore Mulford is the oldest nursing student in the first cohort at 41 years old and said he feels like a “big brother” to the other students.

Local female police officers share challenges, overcoming sexual harassment and plans for equity. Throughout her career, Blackwelder said she felt she had to try harder than her male coworkers while facing sexist jokes and innuendos from coworkers and sexual harassment from superiors as a young officer.

Elon baseball drops second game of home-and-home series vs. UNC Greensboro

After a perfect first inning by both junior right-handed pitcher Ben Sieracki and UNCG junior right-handed pitcher Caleb Cozart, the Phoenix earned runners on first and second in the top of the second, but a pair of strikeouts — one looking and one swinging — quieted its scoring threat. In the bottom of the inning, UNCG junior right fielder and cleanup hitter Dosi Jonas piped a ball to the right-center warning track, reaching second standing up. One groundout later, a sacrifice fly by UNCG junior first baseman GC Jarman gave the Spartans the early 1-0 advantage.

Women in politics: representation, contention

Sophomore Reese Guckert said that she first became interested in politics after feeling judged for expressing her views during the 2016 presidential election. Today, Guckert said she is both inspired and frustrated by both party’s responses regarding women in politics. Guckert, the public relations chair for the university’s College Republicans club, said that a candidate’s appearance is not something that the candidate themselves nor voters should be focusing on. Guckert said this is something she likes about Republican 2024 presidential candidate Nikki Haley.

Social district to open in downtown Elon

The town of Elon is establishing a social district — an area that allows patrons of downtown businesses to purchase and drink alcohol outdoors — outside of local restaurants such as Pandora’s Pies, MaGerk’s and TANGENT Eat+Bar.

Elon University’s Active Citizen Series hosts spring deliberative dialogue on mass shootings

Since the dialogue was first planned four months ago, community and school shootings have only increased into the new year — 94 mass shootings have been reported in 2023 as of Feb. 28, according to the Gun Violence Archive. The discussions were partly led by a guide from the National Issues Forums Institute on How Should We Prevent Mass Shootings in Our Communities, with students, faculty, staff and community members sharing additional ideas for prevention and exchanging views.

Elon Town Council discusses lack of parking downtown, proposes metered parking

A main problem Elon residents have with downtown Elon is a lack of parking. Benchmark planning, a consulting firm hired by the town of Elon to create a master plan for downtown Elon, proposed metered parking in some locations downtown. During the Feb. 27 council meeting, Benchmark planning shared findings of a survey and focus groups they hosted for input on downtown Elon.

Elon University men’s basketball loses emotional Senior Night game

The Elon University men’s basketball team started off hot making 9-16 shots in the opening minutes on Saturday but fell off as the game went on, allowing the University of Delaware to dominate and win 70-54. Elon, who came into Saturday’s game with its first round Colonial Athletic Association Tournament matchup already locked in against William & Mary, did not have much to play for with regard to standings.
