Elon's Paint Race

Students gathered at South Campus on Saturday to get a little messy for a cause. About 500 students signed up for Campus Rec's first annual paint race, running or walking 2K (about 1.3 miles), and getting hit with colored dye at checkpoints along the way. At the end of the race, participants had the opportunity to dye t-shirts, and made sure to take plenty of pictures. The proceeds from the event will help run Elonthon, Elon's 24-hour dance marathon in the spring.

Allison's Night of Fright

Running away from your worst nightmare. I visited Woods of Terror in Greensboro this weekend, where making you scream is their specialty. "When you pop out and the first person falls back and then they all fall back,I play dominoes with them," said Ember, one of the actresses and head of makeup at Woods of Terror. I thought I was brave enough handle the haunt but I couldn't make it through without getting spooked. Director of Public Relations and Marketing at Woods of Terror, Deborah Bryant says the attraction feels so real...and that's what makes it one Readers Digest's top ten scares in the country. "We did everything except kill somebody out here.

Woofstock: A Bark in the Park

Hundreds of people and canines strolled the Burlington City Park Saturday for the some tail-wagging, paw shaking and camera licking fun. "You could have a completely awful day and come home to your dog and everything is erased," said Katie Dukeshire, Co-Organizer of Woofstock. It was a gathering of companionship and music.

Thomas penalty kick helps Elon upset No. 21 Furman in overtime

It took 91 minutes and 45 seconds of soccer, but the Elon University men’s soccer team was able to beat the 21st ranked Furman University Paladins on senior forward Chris Thomas’ penalty kick less than two minutes into overtime. The win was the third over a nationally ranked team for the Phoenix, who move to 2-0 in Southern Conference play after last weekend’s 2-0 win over Davidson College. The game went back and forth, with several quality scoring chances in each half for each team.

The language of clothing: Students publicly cross dress to examine social constructs

If you were on Elon University’s campus Oct. 3, you just might have seen a young man sporting a pair of red high heels. Senior Logan Sutton bravely donned the heels for a project for his Performance Studies class, in which students were asked to cross dress in public and interact with others without telling them it was an assignment. “Our clothes come to define who we are, so by altering that in some way that is distinctly the opposite gender, we get to perceive what other people think about it through our interactions,” Sutton said. This analysis of gender construction through clothing is all part of the concept of the class, taught by Elizabeth Patterson, assistant professor of theatre, who said the purpose of this upper-level course is to analyze the relationship between a dramatic performance onstage and social performance, which is how individuals interact with others on a daily basis. Cultural expression through dress Clothing is just one example of how individuals communicate with each other, Patterson said, so the project serves as a way for students to see first-hand how others respond to how they dress, particularly if what they wear isn’t typically associated with their sex. “Fashion is the only element of cultural expression in which we participate everyday, whether we are aware that we’re doing it or not,” Patterson said.
