Sewage water floods two apartments in Oaks Area complex

At least four residents of Janie Poole Brown Hall in the Oaks Area apartment complex at Elon University packed their belongings today and vacated their first-floor apartment after sewage water seeped from the shower drain and saturated their living space. Sophomore Margaret Bryant, junior Jessica Edwards and their two other roommates have temporarily relocated to Trollinger House while Physical Plant repairs the damage to the bathroom, carpet and flooring caused by the contaminated water.

Oaks residents return to leaking ceilings

Some students who moved back to Elon University’s campus had an early surprise, as the ceilings in the Oaks D building leaked rainwater into many of the structure’s apartments. Leaks were seen primarily in the third and second floors of Oaks D, although Robert Buchholz, director of Physical Plant, said there were some leaks that reached the first floor. Buchholz attributed the leaks to the way the roof on Oaks D was constructed. “It’s at a place where the face of the building juts out, so the roof had to adjust to being an angled roof and they didn’t do a good job with that one particular spot,” Buchholz said. This angled construction, as opposed to a flat roof, allowed for more places where water could seep through. “You usually have to make an adjustment on the pitch on the roof and it’s two uneven angled pieces and so it leaked there at that joint,” Buchholz said. Junior Katie Maraghy, a resident on the third floor of Oaks D, said the damage from the leak was visible as soon as she moved into the apartment. “When (my roommate and I) first got back from summer break, there were pieces of our ceiling all over the common room floor,” Maraghy said.

Design for McEwen School of Communications finalized, plans continue to develop

Designs for the construction and renovation of the McEwen School of Communications at Elon University have been finalized, though some specifics of the new building remain undecided. Construction is now set to begin in approximately three years and is expected to take 12 - 14 months for completion. Elon has reached an agreement for the design of the new building with Robert A.M.

Trollinger House closed to students after arrival on campus

Students who intended to live in the Trollinger House this year were in for a surprise when they arrived on campus late last month. Only three students signed up to live in Trollinger House, which has been undergoing renovations since the beginning of the summer, prompting Elon University to close the house to residents. “Safety was the main reason for the decision,” said MarQuita Barker, associate director of Residence Life.

Offense struggles as Phoenix fall to North Carolina A&T

Volleyball dominates 5th set to close out Gardner-Webb

The Elon University volleyball team hosted Gardner-Webb University Friday Sept. 13, and neither side was able to run away with the victory throughout the first four sets. Then the fifth set happened. Elon rolled easily to a 15-2 set win, and toppled the Runnin’ Bulldogs 3-2 (25-22, 19-25, 25-23, 17-25, 15-2) in the first game of the Elon Phoenix Classic in Alumni Gym. “I think we were determined to not lose another fifth set,” said Elon head coach Mary Tendler, referring to the team snapping a three-game losing streak in five set matches.

Burlington man charged with 20 additional charges of solicitation, sexual exploitation of a minor

A Burlington man, who worked at The Oak House coffee shop in downtown Elon as an assistant manager as of March 2026, has been charged with 10 additional charges of solicitation of a child by a computer and dissemination to a minor under 16 years of age, alongside 10 charges of sexual exploitation of a minor after initially being arrested March 5. The dissemination charges date back to November 2025.

Elon University’s Student Government Association updates finance bylaws

Elon University’s Student Government Association’s finance board has updated the finance bylaws. Finance bylaws are updated every year. The finance board reviews notes made throughout the year on the current bylaws and reviews ideas the board has come up with which could be added to the bylaws. After reviewing, the vice president of finance, the finance board, the SGA senate and the rest of the executive council will have the opportunity to suggest changes.
