Blog: Elon moves to the CAA - What now?

Well, the Elon University athletic department took my advice and officially announced a move to the Colonial Athletic Association for the 2014-15 academic year. Now that the move is official, what are its implications? New Opponents No more Appalachian State University, no more Davidson College.

Elon Joins Colonial Athletic Association

Elon University announced Thursday that it will leave the Southern Conference and join the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) beginning in the 2014-2015 school year. There are currently 1,850 students who are from the CAA footprint.

Elon athletics jumping to Colonial Athletic Conference

Following the announcement early Wednesday afternoon of a news conference May 23, sources have confirmed Elon University Athletics will exit the Southern Conference for the Colonial Athletic Association. While the news conference will be held Thursday, Adam Smith of The Burlington Times-News confirmed with administration the Phoenix will make the move after learning President Leo Lambert had officially informed Southern Conference commissioner John Iamarino of the switch. The announcement comes 10 years after Elon originally joined the Southern Conference in 2003.

Elon To Join The Colonial Athletic Association

Elon Local News has confirmed with multiple sources that Elon University is leaving the Southern Conference and joining the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA). The decision comes two weeks after Davidson announced they were joining the Atlantic 10 Conference.

Furman torches Elon in tournament opener

Elon University senior starting pitcher Kyle Webb was a perfect 6-0 in Southern Conference play this season, making him a clear choice to start Wednesday’s SoCon tournament opener against host Furman University in Greenville, S.C. The Phoenix fell behind on runs in each of the first three innings and couldn’t recover, dropping the opener of the tournament 10-1. After a delay with one out in the top of the first inning due to lightning in the area, the game resumed after Will Muzika singled and scored on a triple to center from Greg Harrison. Chris Ohmstede put Furman up 2-0 with a one-out home run to left field in the top of the second.

Student has special tie to Derby Winner

The Kentucky Derby saw Maryland thoroughbred Orb in its most recent winner's circle a little more than a week ago. Sophomore Dave Pons has a special tie to the racehorse that put him right at the finish line at Churchill Downs. Pons' father breeds racehorses at Merryland Farms in Hydes, Maryland.

Students Protest Intolerance at College Coffee

Students staged a demonstration at College Coffee on Tuesday morning, protesting what they claim is intolerance and inaction at Elon University. "Your silence is acceptance," senior Jasmine Whaley said, starting the protest. In unison, the protestors yelled slurs including "faggot," "dyke," "nigger," "coon," and "feminazi." After each slur, an individual student said: "Don't accept it, speak against it." [div class="alignleft"] [/div] "You are probably more offended by the words than the culture of apathy that allows it to happen," Whaley said.

Review: Moving Visuals lights up McCrary Theatre with artistic inspiration

The lights beamed down. Dancers strutted across the stage with the veracity of runway models. Their fashionable dresses caught the light in all the right ways. And that was just the opening number. This introductory piece from “Moving Visuals,” the Elon Dance Company Spring Concert, was entitled “Runaway.” It featured the choreography of guest artist Larry Keigwin and 14 members of the Elon Dance Company. Inspired by visual art, the spring dance concert was born from the creative interpretations of art originating in nature and the observation of different artistic periods.
