Rip Chord to be featured on 'The Best of A Cappella 2014' compilation album

Every year, Varsity Vocals produces “BOCA: Best of College A Cappella” and “BOHSA:  Best of High School A Cappella.” These two albums feature the best tracks from groups around the world. Varsity Vocals receives hundreds of submissions every year and this year Elon’s own Rip_Chord and its track “Beauty and a Beat” have been selected to appear on BOCA 2014. “We apply for BOCA every year, but have never been chosen until now,” said senior John Molloy, president of Rip_Chord.

Revamped lineup brings fresh start to Phoenix

Consistency is always a key component to having a successful basketball team. Elon University men’s basketball coach Matt Matheny had that for 21 games, using the same starting lineup in all of those contests. But following three straight losses, including a blowout on the road to University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and a 62-59 setback at Samford University, Matheny knew it was time for some changes. Changes for the better. Matheny inserted senior guard Jack Isenbarger and junior guard Kevin Blake into the starting lineup, replacing junior Austin Hamilton and sophomore Tanner Samson.

State of the Union: new year, same promises

Clap. Clap. Clap. Once again, President Barack Obama, with the help of trusty speech writers, lies and half-truths, and an unyielding determination to grow already intrusive government involvement in our lives has managed to deliver another State of the Union address rich in rhetoric and sound bites, but hollow in real substance. The 2014 SOTU rehashed many ideas from the president’s former speeches, which have overwhelmingly faltered.

Exploration of “12 Years A Slave”: Elon’s quest for diversity

We are often told as Elon University students that we live in the “Elon Bubble.” But if you look a bit closer at the advertising boards and posters around campus throughout Winter Term, you will see a focus on diversity. The Oaks Neighborhood has taken this to heart by starting a book program in which students are to read “12 Years a Slave” over the span of Winter Term.

Kate McKinnon of 'SNL' to perform at Elon

Kate McKinnon, a cast member for “Saturday Night Live,” will perform at 8:30 p.m. Feb. 19 at Elon University’s McCrary Theatre. McKinnon debuted as a cast member on “Saturday Night Live” April 2012, becoming the third openly gay cast member in the show’s 38-year history.

Wildcats, Orange leading college basketball landscape

As the college basketball season enters February, three teams have remained unbeaten and have established themselves as part of the best in the country: the University of Arizona, Syracuse University and Wichita State University. Of those three, the Orange and the Wildcats have the best chance to remain undefeated and cut down the nets in Arlington, Texas in April.

Lineup change, attacking mentality leads Elon to win

For the first time in 21 games this season, Elon University coach Matt Matheny decided to start a different lineup of five players. But, it was more than just subbing senior guard Jack Isenbarger and junior guard Kevin Blake into the lineup that helped the Phoenix snap a three-game losing skid and beat Western Carolina University, 74-60, at home. Elon worked to attack more offensively and defensively while putting down their heads and focusing, avenging a 74-62 loss at Western Carolina from Jan.

Colonnades residents expand their global palates at residence life event

Colonnades residents sampled food and experienced traditions from over a dozen countries at Wednesday night’s “Walk around the World.” At the event, residents braved the cold to visit themed common rooms on the floors of each Colonnades building. At the event, students ate Belgian waffles, drank Turkish coffee, received Brazilian somba dance lessons and learned facts about the Philippines. Attendees received Phoenix Passports, which were stamped at each floor.

North Carolinians rate public schools poorly in new Elon Poll

As K-12 students across North Carolina prepare for their winter break, the Elon University Poll released poll data on Dec. 17 finding that most North Carolinians gave mediocre or poor grades to public schools across the state. “The states have always had deep authority on education, but there has been more federal involvement in various years,” Director of the Elon University Poll Jason Husser said. “So we thought, well, this is the time for us to really look in depth about what do people think about North Carolina schools.”

Grief, loss support group provides comfort for Elon faculty, staff

Elon University associate chaplain Rev. Julie Tonnesen said loss and grief are universal emotions, but found that they can be difficult for faculty and staff to process while continuing their usual routines. “Even when we show up to work, that doesn’t mean that we get to put the rest of our lives on the back burner,” Tonnesen said. “Our grief comes with us. It’s not something we can just keep on a shelf at home.” In collaboration with Counseling Services, the Truitt Center for Religious and Spiritual Life, began offering a monthly group for faculty and staff to support those affected by loss.
