The Elon University softball team concluded its weekend series with Georgia Southern University on the wrong end of a decidedly one-sided 9-1 loss to the Eagles March 23 in Statesboro, Ga.

The Eagles immediately answered Elon’s run with one of their own in the bottom of the first.

Emily Snider laid down a sacrifice bunt that Elon junior starter Caitlin O’Shea fielded and threw to first to get the sure out, allowing Taylor Rogers to score.

In the bottom of the third, the Eagles seized control of the game. With runners on the corners and one out, Kourtny Thomas reached on a fielder’s choice, allowing Rogers to score.

Two batters later, Kaitlyn Johnson ripped a double to right, scoring Thomas and Shelby Morrill and stretching the Eagles’ lead to 4-1.

State softballThe Eagles continued their offensive onslaught in the bottom of the fifth. With runners on second and third, Johnson roped a single through the right side to score Nicole Benton. Hamilton, up next, hit a second straight single to score Morgan Robinson and stretch the Eagles’ lead to 6-1. Johnson, who had moved to third on Hamilton’s single, scored the seventh Eagles’ run on a wild pitch. Two batters later, Rogers chopped a ground ball to short that she beat to first, scoring Hamilton.

The Eagles would add their last run in the bottom of the sixth. With the bases loaded and two outs, Lexi Allen lined a single up the middle to score Robinson.

O’Shea (4-6), struggled through 5 2/3 innings, allowing nine runs, all earned, on nine hits, walking six and striking out one.

The Phoenix will travel to Raleigh for a mid-week nonconference game against North Carolina State University on Wednesday, March 26. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
