Rebel Wilson hosts MTV Movie Awards, solidifies Breakthrough Performance award

Rebel Wilson continued to break into the U.S. movie community Sunday night as she hosted the MTV Movie Awards. She used her on-the-spot comedy as well as her slapstick humor to open the show with a fake double nip-slip. Wilson joked that she was shocked she was asked to host the awards show and that MTV was shocked also. “They thought I was Adele,” Wilson said. Wilson used her homeland, Australia, as inspiration for one of her outfits as she carried around a stuffed koala bear that she said had x-ray vision to prank celebrities Quvenzha?e Wallis and Chris Evans. Taylor Lautner, famous for his 6-pack abs, accepted the “Shirtless Oscar” while wearing a fat stomach underneath his button up shirt.

A reflection on tragedy

Yesterday, two bombs exploded at the Boston Marathon.  Reports say three were killed but we still do not know many details.  My hands shake and tears form as I think back to six years ago when Seung-Hui Cho went on a shooting spree at Virginia Tech and killed 32 students.  My brother was there that day and I remember the fear of not being able to reach his cell.  When the cell networks in Boston went down, I felt for the families who could not reach their friends and family members.  Not knowing if loved ones are alright is the worst part of any tragedy.  Media coverage is going to focus on these bombings for the next few weeks and then will go back to their regular programming. Despite this national tragedy, we cannot be ignorant to tragedies abroad.

Explosions reported at Boston Marathon

Witnesses are reporting two explosions at the finish line of the Boston Marathon shortly before 3 p.m. According to Boston Police Commissioner, Ed Davis, two explosions occurred simultaneously on Boylston Street, and the third explosion occurred at JFK Library.

Two more explosive devices found at Boston Marathon

Following up to our original post, two more explosive devices have been found at the Boston Marathon by Boston police and are currently being dismantled, the Boston Globe reports. It is unclear what type of explosives were found by authorities, reports the Associated Press, and no motive has been found for the attacks. See a video of the explosion here.

Wind turbines may harness green energy off N.C. shore

Five companies are vying to develop wind farms off of North Carolina’s coast, an effort that would promote and produce green energy in the state and the surrounding area. The federal government introduced the idea in December 2012 by asking companies about their interest in offshore wind development.

Elon University launches Writing Excellence Initiative

Elon University is currently launching the Writing Excellence Initiative, a project aimed to make writing a key component of every student’s Elon education. The Elon community started developing the project in 2010 to build on the school’s mission of “integrating learning across the disciplines, putting knowledge into practice, and preparing students to be global citizens and informed leaders motivated by concern for the common good.” The Writing Excellence Initiative is a part of Elon’s overarching Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP), as a required part of Elon’s reaccreditation process. The goal of the initiative is to prepare every Elon student to be an outstanding writer, regardless of his or her major. In creating “engaged minds, inspiring leaders, and global citizens,” the initiative is focusing on developing students’ abilities to write in three ways: writing to learn, writing in a discipline, and writing as a citizen. Writing to learn will focus on analyzing and problem solving, while writing in a discipline will be geared toward a student's individual major.
