Wildcats, Orange leading college basketball landscape

As the college basketball season enters February, three teams have remained unbeaten and have established themselves as part of the best in the country: the University of Arizona, Syracuse University and Wichita State University. Of those three, the Orange and the Wildcats have the best chance to remain undefeated and cut down the nets in Arlington, Texas in April.

After sticking with the same starting lineup for the first 21 games, a reenergized Elon University Men's Basketball team switched it up for the first time all season and left Alumni Gym with a 74-60 victory over Western Carolina on Thursday, Jan.

Lineup change, attacking mentality leads Elon to win

For the first time in 21 games this season, Elon University coach Matt Matheny decided to start a different lineup of five players. But, it was more than just subbing senior guard Jack Isenbarger and junior guard Kevin Blake into the lineup that helped the Phoenix snap a three-game losing skid and beat Western Carolina University, 74-60, at home. Elon worked to attack more offensively and defensively while putting down their heads and focusing, avenging a 74-62 loss at Western Carolina from Jan.

Colonnades residents expand their global palates at residence life event

Colonnades residents sampled food and experienced traditions from over a dozen countries at Wednesday night’s “Walk around the World.” At the event, residents braved the cold to visit themed common rooms on the floors of each Colonnades building. At the event, students ate Belgian waffles, drank Turkish coffee, received Brazilian somba dance lessons and learned facts about the Philippines. Attendees received Phoenix Passports, which were stamped at each floor.

Phoenix eyes revenge as Catamounts come to town

Where did the season go? All of a sudden, there are only ten games left in the Elon University men’s basketball season and the Phoenix sits at 10-11, 3-3 in Southern Conference play. For a team projected to win the Southern Conference, there is still significant work to be done.

Players hope to impress with dreams of Brazil

The January transfer window is often looked at as a way for clubs to get a much needed boost going into the second half of the season.  But, in many cases players are the ones who take advantage of the “silly season” the most.  With the World Cup approaching in June, players are desperate to prove that they deserve a spot on a plane to Brazil.

Elon women's track runs despite chilly weather

When 20-degree weather strikes, most people prefer to stay inside. But five days a week, the Elon women's track team is out running regardless of the weather. To senior Allyson Oram, a member of the track team for four years, this commitment to training is nothing out of the ordinary. "I've done workouts in the pouring rain," she said. Three days a week, the team runs six to eight miles, and they spend the other two days working out on the track.

Mebane teacher raises her 'Voice' in national singing competition

Televised singing competitions turn ordinary people into stars every year. Woodlawn Middle School teacher Linnea Bethany Coon never thought her love for singing would take her places. "It's one of those things that you dream about but you just are like, 'No, that kind of stuff just doesn't happen to everyday people like me.'" Coon said. That's what Coon thought before she sent in her application to be a contestant on NBC's "The Voice." When her best friend insisted she audition, Coon thought it was just a joke.
