El Centro celebrates Central American independence

To celebrate Central American independence, El Centro hosted a cultural jubilee outside Lakeside Dining Hall Monday evening. Held on the 193rd anniversary of Central America’s declaration of independence from Spain and at the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month, the celebration included Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico and Nicaragua. The event featured Hispanic food made by El Centro students, including a taco bar, coconut balls, baleadas from Honduras, gallo pinto from Costa Rica and flautas from Mexico. Students from all over campus came to enjoy the free food and experience the Hispanic culture.

Visiting professor brings agricultural roots to neuroscience

Daniel Herr, nanoscience department chair at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, sees potential for better technology all around him, from the feet of a fruit fly to the DNA replication of his granddaughter. “A baby is assembling bio-bits a million times faster than a factory can put the same amount into a transistor,” Herr said, referring to blocks of biological information.

Apples and Airplanes rocks Elon tailgate

Football and tailgating weren't the only seasonal favorites welcomed at Elon this Saturday; so was Apples and Airplanes, a Raleigh-based multi-instrumental alternative modern rock band. "We love playing at Elon,"said Aaron Ordy, guitar player for the band.

YouTuber begins journey at Elon

You may say first year student Katy Bellotte has several online friends. She has close to 300 thousand YouTube subscribers. "It's crazy to think that I'm sitting in my dorm filming a video and [a] million people have the chance to watch it," Bellotte said. Her channel has more than 21 million views, but her online presence goes beyond YouTube.

Elon sweeps home cross country meet

The Elon University men’s and women’s cross country teams dominated a rainy Saturday morning at the Elon Cross Country Course by sweeping the Elon Invitational. The four-team meet, which also included North Carolina A&T State University, North Carolina Central University and Lenoir-Rhyne University, featured a five-kilometer event for the women and an eight-kilometer race for the men.

Is football heading to the same fate as boxing?

Recently, I was discussing sports with a good friend of mine when he mentioned that his father believed that football is headed towards a similar fate to that of which boxing has become. His quote made me think about how the current state of football has changed since its inception into United States pop culture almost forty years ago, a time in which heavyweight boxing had reached the pinnacle of its popularity amongst viewers in America, as well as much of the world.

Phoenix not shaken by losing skid

The Elon University women’s soccer team kept its composure despite struggles to open up the year.  After beating Jacksonville State University 2-0 in its season opener, the Phoenix has lost four straight games. “Four straight losses is something we’re not used to,” said Elon head coach Chris Neal.
