Update on the New School of Communications

Danielle Commons isn't the only building awaiting major construction. The fundraising campaign for the new School of Communications is officially one month in, and the Dean of the School of Communications, Paul Parsons, said that 8 out of the 15 million dollars the school wants to raise has already been secured. Parsons said the school is in a good position to raise the remaining 7 million dollars over the next 14 months of campaigning.

Flaws exposed in Elon offense during loss to Charlotte

Tentative, stagnant and slow are all accurate words to describe the Elon University men’s basketball team’s offense. There wasn’t any sense of connectivity, as the Phoenix couldn’t muster to deal with the length of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in a 73-60 loss on Sunday, Nov.

Allied Church worker relates to those he serves

National Hunger and Homeless Awareness Week occurs the week prior Thanksgiving; according to a statistic issued by the Center for the Carolinas, there are 144 people affected by homelessness in Alamance County. "I could've been out on the street because I didn't have a way to go," Allied Churches worker Marcus Sowell said. Sowell is a maintenance worker at Allied Churches, helping the people who are somewhere he almost ended up. "I just feel the biggest empathy and respect for everybody who can get up and still want to live after sleeping on the ground," he said. When Sowell was younger, he ventured out on his own and struggled with finding a job and keeping steady housing. "At one point you feel the need to give up.

Elon senior to compete in national pageant competition

While some students begin to plan their winter breaks, one Elon senior plans to compete. Senior Yasmine Arrington has many titles to her name: she's a College Fellow, the founder of ScholarCHIPS, and soon, she may be Miss Plus U-S-of-A. "I'm just really thrilled to be in the running and to be the official representative of the District of Columbia and of course, I'll be joined with other young women through out the fifty states," Arrington said. Miss Plus USofA is a national, multifaceted competition for plus sized women.

Elon falls to Maine on Senior Day

Following Elon's 24-17 loss to Maine on Saturday evening, Phoenix seniors hung around on the field for a few extra moments as they left Rhode's Stadium for the final time. "We've shared a lot of disappointment and some success together," Elon senior linebacker Jonathan Spain said of his fellow seniors.

Semester at Sea wellness update

Spending 14 days at sea has proven a lot less difficult than I’d initially imagined. In fact, the time is flying, and I can’t believe I’m already halfway done with my wellness challenge! As you’ll see, I’ve had a lot of time to relax, enjoy the sun and catch up with friends, and it’s been nice to have a break from traveling to focus on myself and my personal goals. I’m proud to say I’ve managed to avoid dessert entirely so far (which really says something because some of the desserts they serve on this ship are amazing). I’m also glad that I’ve been doing well in terms of eating fruit and veggies, but I’ve clearly been slacking off in the exercise and reading departments.

Elon volleyball drops final two games of season

The Elon University volleyball team lost its last two matches of the year this past weekend, getting swept by the University of Delaware (25-21, 27-25, 25-14) and falling in four sets to Towson University (25-18, 22-25, 25-19, 25-19). The Phoenix ends its inaugural season in the Colonial Athletic Association with an overall record of 6-26 and a mark of 1-15 in CAA play.

Eddy, Sabato fuel Elon in season opener

The Elon University men's basketball team kicked its season off with a bang Friday night as Luke Eddy and Tony Sabato led a Phoenix comeback to take down Florida Atlantic 64-58. Down by 10 just 12 minutes into the game something clicked for the Phoenix as they slowly but surely chipped away at the Owls' lead before taking the advantage for good with 8:35 left in the contest. Elon, despite going cold on the offensive end and scoring only one bucket over the next four minutes, managed to hold off the FAU attack with stingy defense that limited the Owls to 4-of-12 shooting over the game's final 8:52. "For an inexperienced team and a young team to stay as consistently focused as we did is a great tribute to our players," Elon Head Coach Matt Matheny said. The stars of the night for Elon was the unlikely duo of Eddy, who was starting in place of an injured Austin Hamilton, and Sabato, who was making only his second career start after backing up Lucas Troutman for the past two years. Eddy, who finished with 13 points on the night, was the sparkplug for Elon, running up and down the floor, driving the lane and fighting for every ball, making several key plays in the game's waning minutes that helped secure the win for the Phoenix. Sabato was Elon's leader down low, fighting through FAU's much bigger frontcourt on his way to a team-high 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting. A big factor in the win was the depth Elon displayed throughout the night, playing nine players for at least 17 minutes, including five underclassmen. "These guys came in and we knew from the first game of pickup that they were going to come in and be good," Sabato said.

Eddy, Sabato star as Elon clips Florida Atlantic

The Elon University Phoenix men’s basketball team opened up regular season play on Friday night by defeating the Florida Atlantic University Owls 64-58 at Alumni Gym. The Phoenix trailed the Owls for a majority of the game up until midway through the second half when sophomore guard Luke Eddy drained a 3-pointer to put Elon up 52-49. Eddy was a bright spot for the Phoenix, making his first career start in place of injured senior guard Austin Hamilton, by being one of Elon’s leading scorers with 13 total points. “I thought [Eddy] was very aggressive offensively,” Elon head coach Matt Matheny said.

Senior acting majors host senior showcase

The members of the BFA acting Class of 2015 are taking a big step toward making their dreams a reality with their Senior Showcase, a performance event that compiles the students’ past four years of hard work and acting education. Each actor will contribute to a total of 11 monologues and six scenes.

Administration makes new plans for building projects on campus

Expect to see more construction cones around campus. The board of trustees recently approved a project to add additional facilities to the Danieley neighborhood. The new facilities will include a fitness center, various offices, a demonstrative kitchen and Einstein Bagels, which will be located next to Qdoba.

Maker Takeover showcases student projects, inventions

Over 40 projects were displayed in the Moseley Center for the annual Maker Takeover, hosted by the Maker Hub on April 29. From motorized phoenix wings to 3D printed drones, attendees roamed through table displays to see unique pieces made by Elon students.
