ELON UNIVERSITY MUSIC THEATRE CLASS OF 2015 PRODUCES TONY WINNING MUSICAL - THE MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD
ELON, NC, November 11, 2014 - The ELON University Musical Theatre Class of 2015 is excited to present the whodunit musical comedy "The Mystery of Edwin Drood, The Musical" on November 21, 22 and 23. Based on Charles Dickens' last unfinished novel, it keeps everyone guessing - even the actors - until the end when the audience decides "whodunit."
This Rupert Holmes musical is set at the Music Hall Royale featuring an exuberant group of Victorian actors. There's high-spirited song and dance, comedy, romance, a woman disguised as a man, and much more. Then Edwin Drood goes missing, and all that's found is his bloodied coat. Who murdered Edwin Drood? With numerous suspects, the audience gets to write the ending that Charles Dickens didn't.
"The Mystery of Edwin Drood is a fantastically funny piece of theatre, full of British music hall music, gimmicks, and comedy! It's a perfect piece for the music theatre class of 2015, who are not only hilarious and talented, but intelligent, hard working students. I am beyond excited to see the show!" said Musical Theatre Department Coordinator Catherine McNeela. According to the show's directors Hunter Brown and Joe Bach, "It's the epitome of live theatre, anything can happen because the audience picks the ending, the actors don't even know what's going to happen and that drives everyone to bring their A-game to each performance. There's a great deal of spontaneity and energy because there are thousands of possibilities."
When asked why should someone should come see the musical Brown said, "It's like a Monty Python-meets-Agatha Christie extravaganza and will have the audience on the edge of their seats, or more likely on the floor laughing." Bach added, "We have worked hard to make original choices in the staging. And yes, it should make you chuckle, a lot!"
"Edwin Drood" won five Tony Awards, eight Drama Desk awards and five Outer Critics Circle awards on Broadway, including Best Musical, Best Score, Best Book, Director, and Actor. "Boisterous and delectable. Shimmering musical pleasure to savor!" The New York Times declares, "A hit! Sheer fun!" "An exuberant romp," says Variety.
"Drood" is produced and performed by each member of the Music Theatre graduating class of 2015 who built the sets, staged the scenes, choreographed the incredible dance sequences, customized the sound and music for the Black Box, and who together bring to life this professional New York styled production.

About the Musical
This wildly warm-hearted theatrical experience kicks off when the Music Hall Royale (a hilariously loony Victorian musical troupe) "puts on" its flamboyant rendition of an unfinished Dickens' mystery. The story itself deals with John Jasper, a Jekyll-and-Hyde choirmaster who is quite madly in love with his music student, the fair Miss Rosa Bud. Now, Miss Bud is, in turn, engaged to Jasper's nephew, young Edwin Drood. Our title character disappears mysteriously one stormy Christmas Eve- but has Edwin Drood been murdered? And if so, then, whodunnit? Musical numbers include "The Wage of Sin," "Perfect Strangers," "Both Sides of the Coin," "Don't Quit While You're Ahead" and "Moonfall." The giddy playfulness of this play-within-a-play draws the audience toward one of the play's most talked-about features, which allows the audience to vote on the solution as prelude to the most unusual and hilarious finale!
