Elon walks off over North Carolina A&T

No Mike Kennedy, no problem. The Elon University head baseball coach missed Tuesday night's game against North Carolina A&T State University due to an ejection last week, but the Phoenix still managed to pull out an 8-7 win over the visiting Aggies. The win did not come easy for Elon.

Changes coming to Greek Accreditation

To be recognized by Greek life at Elon, fraternities and sororities need to go through a new accreditation process. According to the Office of Greek Life, the program will evaluate organizations on three different performance levels: baseline, maroon or gold.

Power outage hits Elon

Several buildings on Elon's campus lost power at approximately 2:30 p.m as a result of power outages in Alamance County. Duke Energy told ELN there were two power outages in Alamance County that affected 2200 customers. Most buildings at Elon affected by the outages were west of North O' Kelly Ave., the Francis Center, the Danieley Center and South Campus, according to an email from Dean of Student Life Smith Jackson. Dr. Jackson said there isn't a timetable for the restoration of power.

Elon baseball splits final road series with Appalachian State

For the final time in the 2013 regular season, the Elon University baseball team went on the road, this time to Appalachian State University in Boone to take on the Mountaineers. While Sunday’s rubber match of the series was rained out, the Phoenix split the first two games of the series with Appalachian State in dropping game one 9-1 but escaping game two with a 10-8 victory behind five perfect inning from senior starting pitcher Kyle Webb. Scoreless through the first three and a half inning Friday in game one, the Mountaineers broke through in the bottom of the fourth against senior starting pitcher Spencer Medick when freshman second baseman Dillon Dobson grounded out to second base with the bases loaded. Appalachian State got another run in the fifth inning when senior outfielder Will Callaway hit a sacrifice fly to right field. Trailing 2-0, the wheels came off and the Mountaineers chased Medick from the game with a seven run sixth inning.

Elon softball gains momentum, sweeps Chattanooga

It was just another day at the office for junior center fielder Carleigh Nester. With her Elon University softball team tied against the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga in the eighth inning on Sunday May 5, Nester launched a walk-off sacrifice fly to give the Phoenix a 4-3 extra-inning win over the Lady Mocs. The win capped off a three game sweep, the first Southern Conference sweep of the year for Elon.

by Glenda Crawford For the past three years, members of Phi Beta Kappa at Elon University have observed with deep concern the fact that national Phi Beta Kappa foreign language requirements disqualify many top students otherwise eligible for membership.  The national requirements state: Stipulation 3: Candidates shall have demonstrated, by successful work in high school or college, or in the two together, a knowledge of a second or non-native language at least minimally appropriate for a liberal education.

"Everyday I live with the reality that there is a person living in my community who has acted violently towards me in the past and could do so again.

Elon reworks offense in spring practices

Wide receiver Aaron Mellette is now just a legend. A memory of the player who finished his Elon career with 4,254 receiving yards and 44 touchdowns and went on to get drafted by the Baltimore Ravens last weekend. Quarterback Thomas Wilson is also a thing of the past, leaving Elon with a gaping hole under center that is up for grabs. This period of change has allowed third-year head coach Jason Swepson and offensive coordinator Chris Pincince to retool the Elon offense, which averaged 24.7 points per game in 2012. In a preseason scrimmage last Saturday in Rhodes Stadium, Elon showcased a speed-based offense in which the team ran 80 plays in around an hour.

Elon student thrives as two-sport athlete

Playing one varsity sport is hard enough, but for one Elon athlete, senior Ali Ford, playing two sports is just as much fun as playing one. Ford was originally recruited to play basketball for the Phoenix, but had always had a passion for softball.

Mayco Bigelow Community Center in Burlington opened its doors Friday, June 12, for a speech given by U.S. House of Representatives candidate Richard Ojeda. He and his team are making a series of visits throughout the district this summer called the Congressional Town Hall Tour.
