The Elon University softball team’s 2015 schedule was announced on Monday, Dec. 15. The 55-game schedule includes seven matchups against NCAA Tournament teams from a year ago in addition to 21 conference matchups in the Phoenix’s inaugural season in the Colonial Athletic Association. Elon has CAA home series against Towson University, University of Delaware, and road series with the College of Charleston, Drexel University, Hofstra University, and James Madison University. Opening day is on Saturday, Feb.

The Elon University men’s basketball team struggled early on against the Central Pennsylvania College Knights. Things picked up in the second half though, with the Phoenix cruising its way to a 117-73 blowout win. Although the game could have been considered as an exhibition matchup, junior guard Tanner Samson was confident in his team’s ability to show up and play with intensity with a looming four-game road stretch ahead. “It’s a great test for us as a team,” Samson said.
On the surface, the loss of four 1,000-point scorers would seem to provide the 2014-2015 edition of the Elon University men’s basketball team with a steep learning curve. But the players on the court aren’t the only difference for the Phoenix this season.
Elon University recently received two estate gifts totaling more than $1.3 million. The gifts were given from the estates of Margaret (Peggy) Leister ’67 of Towson, Maryland and Muir William Grant and his wife, Lorraine Fogleman Grant of Burlington, North Carolina. The Leister endowment of more than $800,000 will give scholarship aid for students with disabilities and the Fogleman Grant endowment will support students studying music. The two estate gifts come a day after the announcement that Dwight and Martha Schar P’16 and P’19 pledged $12 million to Elon – $8 million towards the expansion of the School of Communications and $4 million to a new multipurpose building that will serve as a place for campus speakers, convocation and athletic events. The Leister endowment Leister supported Elon for many years with annual contributions to The Educational Opportunities Fund for Students with Disabilities before she passed away in 2013.

The Elon University Board of Trustees announced Thursday morning that the university has received its largest single donation in history from the parents of two Elon students. Dwight and Martha Schar, P’16 and P’19, have pledged $12 million for the expansion of the School of Communications and a new multipurpose building that will serve as a central point on campus for national and international speakers, convocation, speeches, rallies and Phoenix Athletics’ events. After the donation, the fundraising campaign for the School of Communications has jumped to $12.1 million, less than $3 million from the goal of $15 million. The latest specifics of the convocation center come from The Elon Commitment Plan of 2009, which outlines the need for a 5,000-seat multipurpose center.
