The Elon women’s lacrosse team fell to University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on Sunday, 21-2. Sophomore midfielder Elle Hvozdovic and sophomore attacker Sloane Kessler provided the only goals for the Phoenix, both of which came after halftime.

The Tar Heels wasted little time getting on the board, as Brittney Coppa scored in under a minute of game time. North Carolina’s momentum only built from there- with 20 minutes to go in the first half, they had already scored six times. By halftime, the score was 16-0 in favor of the Tar Heels.

Elon’s scoring drought continued into the second half, when Hvozdovic ripped a shot past UNC goalie Megan Ward to make the score 17-1 with 25:35 to play. Elon would not score again until the 5:50 mark, when Kessler found the net.

Elon only had eight shot attempts in the game, compared to UNC’s 46. The Phoenix was constantly defending throughout the game. Sophomore goalie Rachel Ramirez played for 48:43, allowing 17 goals and making 11 saves. Freshman Tori Cipollone also spent time guarding the net, playing for 11:17 of the game, with four goals allowed and two saves.

The defeat drops the Phoenix to 3-3 overall for the season, while UNC moves to 5-1. Elon returns to action on Mar. 6 at Rhodes Stadium to take on Coastal Carolina at 6 p.m.
