Plans announced for Historic Neighborhood student commons building

The oldest part of Elon University’s campus is going to get a new addition. A new commons building will be built in the Historic Neighborhood, completing a multi-year renovation plan for the area. Plans for the new building, named the LaRose Student Commons, were officially announced during Homecoming weekend at the Board of Trustees luncheon. President Leo Lambert, joined by donor Gail H. LaRose ’64, announced that LaRose’s $2.5 million gift will be used to build a new student gathering space.

Phoenix rises for Veterans Day

As a child of a Vietnam War veteran, Elon University sophomore Lavinia Johnson has always cherished Veterans Day. “This is such an important holiday because it helps citizens remember why the military is so significant in our society,” she said. “It also reminds veterans how influential they have been to our country.”

Elon Eats: Mixed Rice offers more than authentic Korean cuisine

A framed picture of five Elon University students in familiar maroon caps and gowns sits at the payment counter at Mixed Rice, a restaurant wedged between NC Jelly Donuts and Painted Grape: Craft & Paint studio in Stans Plaza on South Church Street, Burlington. One of the students in the picture, Meredith Carey ’15, said she and her roommates gifted the frame to the restaurant to thank them for the sense of home they provided at every visit.

Aramark plans for humane changes by 2024

Food provider Aramark released its plan to request that their suppliers change the living conditions and butchering practices of broiler chickens to meet humane standards on Thursday, Nov. 3. This plan, published in response to a national campaign by The Humane League, requests that its suppliers' operations be changed by 2024 at the latest.

HARLEM, NEW YORK — Danielle Jones' early morning jog route around the streets of Harlem today included a pit stop she doesn't take every day — a polling location. Whatever heart rate she was monitoring on her iPhone app relaxed for a few minutes while she waited in line to vote, and afterward, she placed a sticker on her Nike sweatshirt to reaffirm to those who passed by that she committed her greatest American civic duty on Election Day.

Strength, energy defined Dennion on, off field

They gathered at midfield, where she played 37 matches in her No. 22 jersey, where she was honored on senior day a year ago, where she touched the hearts of many through her tenacious, dominant play. And right there, on Rudd Field, Nicole Dennion’s former teammates, friends and fellow Elon University athletes lit up this cold November night with candles that formed the number “22” and her initials, “N.K.D.” and with countless memories and stories of the high-energy, always honest woman taken too soon. Alumna publishes book about the comedy in motherhood

DeeDee Filiatreault has spent her career “writing words for other people,” but with the publishing of her first book of essays, the spotlight is on her. Filiatreault graduated Elon in 1993 after serving as the Editor in Chief of The Pendulum. At the time the organization consisted of a few students and a wax machine. “When I became editor, everyone took a step back and I was the one standing there,” Filiatreault said.

North Carolinians rate public schools poorly in new Elon Poll

As K-12 students across North Carolina prepare for their winter break, the Elon University Poll released poll data on Dec. 17 finding that most North Carolinians gave mediocre or poor grades to public schools across the state. “The states have always had deep authority on education, but there has been more federal involvement in various years,” Director of the Elon University Poll Jason Husser said. “So we thought, well, this is the time for us to really look in depth about what do people think about North Carolina schools.”

Grief, loss support group provides comfort for Elon faculty, staff

Elon University associate chaplain Rev. Julie Tonnesen said loss and grief are universal emotions, but found that they can be difficult for faculty and staff to process while continuing their usual routines. “Even when we show up to work, that doesn’t mean that we get to put the rest of our lives on the back burner,” Tonnesen said. “Our grief comes with us. It’s not something we can just keep on a shelf at home.” In collaboration with Counseling Services, the Truitt Center for Religious and Spiritual Life, began offering a monthly group for faculty and staff to support those affected by loss.
