Housing selection process met with student complaint

With upperclassmen taking advantage of the opportunity to live in The Station at Mill Point, a new on-campus housing option available only to juniors and seniors, many students now find themselves with no place to live next year. Juniors and seniors who wanted to live on campus completed phase one of the housing selection last week.

North Carolina learns from Maine in battle surrounding Amendment One

In the past several years, bills to allow same-sex marriage have caused numerous controversies as they have been disputed, vetoed and reversed. Thursday night, The Elon Center for the Study of Religion hosted North Carolina’s first screening of “Question One,” a documentary about the 2009 referendum vote that caused Maine to reverse its move to grant marriage rights to same-sex couples. The documentary, made by Joe Fox and James Nubile, details the battles fought by the “Yes on One” and “No on One” campaigns, groups fighting to vote to reverse and uphold the law respectively.

Southern Conference media also honors Hamilton, Isenbarger

Sophomore guard Jack Isenbarger and freshman guard Austin Hamilton were both honored by the Men's Southern Conference Sports Media Assocation today. Isenbarger was named to the All-Conference Second Team and Hamilton was selected to the All-Freshman Team. This announcement comes one day after both players were recognized by the SoCon coaches. Isenbarger was named to the All-Conference Team and Hamilton was chosen to the All-Freshman Team by league coaches. Davidson College junior forward Jake Cohen, Jr., was named the Malcolm U.

Internet experts, users divided on effects of hyper-connectivity

A recent study fielded by Janna Anderson, director of Elon University’s Imagining the Internet Center and Lee Rainie, director of the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project, surveyed more than 1,000 Internet experts and users on the potential effects of hyper-connectivity on the digital generation. Participants had to choose between two opposite statements and were later allowed to qualify their responses. Fifty-five percent agreed with the following statement: “In 2020 the brains of multitasking teens and young adults are ‘wired’ differently from those over the age of 35 and overall it yields helpful results.

Leigh Iler  LONDON — Travel opportunities are limitless in London, and England has so much to offer.  I have been here for merely three weeks and have already gone to Stonehenge, Oxford, Bath, Canterbury and Dover.  These places are within close proximity to the city, so day trips are quite manageable for students. From London, one can also travel through the United Kingdom.  Wales, Ireland and Scotland all boast beautiful countrysides and gorgeous coastlines.

Acorn transformed from coffee shop to center stage

Dimmed lights, flying sunglasses and a live acoustic rendition of Beyonce’s “Single Ladies” sure doesn't sound like the typical atmosphere at Acorn Coffee Shop. But on Thursday nights throughout the year, the cafe in downtown Elon gets both an aesthetic and acoustic makeover for Open Mic Night. Created by Acorn employee Eddie Talley and manager Max Akhlaghi in the fall of 2011, Open Mic Nights provide students an opportunity to perform for their peers while bringing activity and an increased sense of community to the coffee shop. Although only four of the 10 acts scheduled to perform showed up, the Open Mic Night Feb.

Jansaker, Johnston’s chemistry winning formula for women’s tennis

The Elon women’s tennis team can look to a pair of second-year players as the push behind its 8-2 record halfway through the 2012 season. Sophomore doubles tandem Frida Jansaker and Jordan Johnston are currently ranked 43rd in the nation among doubles, making history as the first Elon girls and the only members of the Southern Conference to be nationally recognized. Women’s tennis head coach Elizabeth Anderson attributes the turnaround to the hard work and development of her young players, as well as their teamwork. “They have really good chemistry, get along really well and they’ve always been friends off the court,” Anderson said.

North Carolinians rate public schools poorly in new Elon Poll

As K-12 students across North Carolina prepare for their winter break, the Elon University Poll released poll data on Dec. 17 finding that most North Carolinians gave mediocre or poor grades to public schools across the state. “The states have always had deep authority on education, but there has been more federal involvement in various years,” Director of the Elon University Poll Jason Husser said. “So we thought, well, this is the time for us to really look in depth about what do people think about North Carolina schools.”

Grief, loss support group provides comfort for Elon faculty, staff

Elon University associate chaplain Rev. Julie Tonnesen said loss and grief are universal emotions, but found that they can be difficult for faculty and staff to process while continuing their usual routines. “Even when we show up to work, that doesn’t mean that we get to put the rest of our lives on the back burner,” Tonnesen said. “Our grief comes with us. It’s not something we can just keep on a shelf at home.” In collaboration with Counseling Services, the Truitt Center for Religious and Spiritual Life, began offering a monthly group for faculty and staff to support those affected by loss.
