LYNCHBURG, Va. — With losses and missed opportunities hanging over its heads, a thrown bat signified a possible jump back to normalcy for the Elon University baseball team. Junior first baseman Casey Jones, the Southern Conference’s best hitter, threw his bat during an eighth-inning at-bat, sparking memories of him doing it countless times early in the season. Early in the season when Elon was doing well, that is. Senior Ryan Pennell worked out of two jams and the Phoenix snapped a six-game losing streak and a nine-game road losing streak with a 7-6 win at No.

With 30 days left (yes, I have been counting) the world has been eagerly anticipating the start of the FIFA World Cup in Brazil. Host Brazil will play Croatia June 12, to kick off the tournament’s group play stage. But what many people in the United States are wondering, just who are we taking down to Brazil to represent our country? On Monday, head coach Jurgen Klinsmann named the 30-man provisional squad from which he will select the final 23-man roster, due June 2.

One-Hit Wonders was this year’s theme for the Elon University Electric Ensemble’s spring concert, and judging from the audience’s non-stop participation throughout the night, it was quite a hit. The concert opened with a high-energy rendition of “Play that Funky Music, White Boy” by Wild Cherry, and the momentum only accelerated from there. The audience that practically filled the theater included a mix of young and old, from raucous students swaying and screaming in the front rows to a bus of elderly patrons that arrived 30 minutes early. Maybe it was the impending mania of finals week, but this was by far one of the rowdiest concerts Electric Ensemble has put on yet. Students, adults and children alike could hardly stay in their seats, and the constant cheering and yelling made the atmosphere a feel bit more like an outdoor arena than McCrary Theatre.
In the final weekend of the regular season, a pair of school records were broken by the Elon women’s track and field team.
Yik-Yak is ruining Elon University. Some fortunate people might ask, what is Yik- Yak? Well, it is an app similar to twitter that allows users to post comments anonymously.
Retirement is a long way off for Elon students, but some have already started planning by investing in the stock market. "I like to call it sophisticated gambling," said senior business fellow, Matt Feldman," so you never know what's going to happen." Feldman learned about the stock market during his sophomore year of high school, when he and a friend participated in a DECA stock competition. "We saw that everyone was buying these things called iPods and that a company called Apple produced them," Feldman said.
As the school year winds down and students prepare for graduation, many students are saying goodbye to their Elon experiences. One of these students is Alexis Stones, who founded the Elon a cappella group, Vital Signs, in the spring of her first year along with her friend Ottavia Pomazon. Pomazon and Stones missed the opportunity to audition for a cappella groups in the fall due to a leadership fellows trip, so they had the idea to create their own. Three years later, Pomazon and Stones, along with six other seniors, were singing their final concert with Vital Signs. "It's crazy to see it how far it's come," Stones said. In their spring concert Friday evening May 9, the seniors of Vital Signs performed with the group one last time, and the group released their first EP.
It finally looked like the Elon University baseball team was getting on the right track. The Phoenix led 6-1 after five innings over Furman University May 11 and was close to snapping a five-game losing streak.
Torrential rainfall struck again at this year’s Spring Show, headlined by B.o.B. and The Chainsmokers, but the event planners — the Student Union Board — had to deal with an additional challenge: This year’s show was outside. Though the rainfall did not deter the show from continuing, another issue would arise SUB would not be able to handle.
The skid reached five consecutive losses and 10 in its last 12 games for the Elon University baseball team after losing the first two games of a three-game series at Furman University May 10. Elon lost the first game, which was suspended because of weather and continued the next day, 14-3 and dropped the second one 9-7. The game was suspended in the middle of the fifth inning with Elon down 4-0.
DURHAM — The Elon University men’s tennis team’s season came to an end on Saturday, May 10, with a 4-1 loss to the University of Tennessee in the opening round of the NCAA tournament. “The players competed hard, they battled,” Elon head coach Michael Leonard.

You know it’s spring at Elon University when the grass gets greener, the temperature rises and students bring out their paintbrushes, sanders and coolers. From the outside looking in, the sight of students sanding down coolers for hours on a sunny spring day might seem a little odd, but at Elon and other universities, it is commonplace — they are simply preparing for Banquet. It has become the custom that when a student is asked to Banquet, a fraternity’s weekend at the beach, the guest thanks his or her host for the invite by painting him a cooler. Painting coolers, a custom more popular in the South, was a new idea to many Elon students from the North. “People told me first semester about painting coolers, but I had never heard about it before coming to college,” said freshman Emma Haslun.
The Elon University baseball team was scheduled to play more home games this year than any other year since joining the Division I ranks. The Phoenix played 30, going 19-11 in them.
