Torrential rainfall struck again at this year’s Spring Show, headlined by B.o.B. and The Chainsmokers, but the event planners — the Student Union Board — had to deal with an additional challenge: This year’s show was outside.

Though the rainfall did not deter the show from continuing, another issue would arise SUB would not be able to handle. After numerous noise complaints, Town of Elon Police shut down the concert after only four songs from B.o.B.'s set.

"We did not offer refunds because over 75 percent of the entire show was performed," outgoing SUB president James Davies said. "SUB has issued formal apologies on our official Facebook and Twitter accounts."

The statement directed all questions and concerns to sub@elon.edu.

"The Town of Elon police works very closely with us," Davies said. "With every outdoor concert we have received noise complaints but not in the frequency of those from this past event. We have attempted to hold our outdoor concerts in various locations including Colonnades parking lot, West Area parking lot and the soccer field. We expected the Ingold lot to prevent this issue because we had the sound projecting toward campus."

Incidentally, this is also the last year for the Spring Show. The budget traditionally used for the show will now go toward one concert during Homecoming in partnership with SGA.

"For the fall homecoming concert, SUB and SGA will work extremely hard to find a location that best serves our student body, alumni and the community," Davies said.

The Chainsmokers go global

Rain has become a common theme of the Spring Show, with last year’s indoor concert held on a rainy spring night as well. However, the phrase “the show must go on” was in full effect the night of May 9 in the Ingold parking lot prior to the show's shut down.

After a slight rain delay, the show opened with Elon University’s Limelight Records’ artist Kid Cas, who sang some original songs and a duet with fellow junior Jasmine Turner.

Students readied their cellphones and charged toward the stage as electric dance music artists The Chainsmokers entered. The duo, famous for their catchy hit “#SELFIE,” played two versions of the song during their set, along with other mixes of crowd-favorite hits.

Despite the dreary weather, students jumped and cheered throughout The Chainsmokers’ set. A highlight of their performance, of course, was their selfie with the crowd.

Just a year and a half ago, Andrew Taggart and Alex Pall of The Chainsmokers were introduced through a friend and started playing music together. When asked about how the name came about, they both just shook their heads and agreed it was a “long story.”

Another unanswerable question was where the “#SELFIE” idea came from. Pall said their friend Alexis recorded the monologue in the beginning.

“She’s awesome, she did a great job,” Pall said.

The duo was introduced to Elon in typical fashion: they were given The Root for dinner. Pall said he enjoyed his steak salad, and Taggart added that, overall, “The Root was real good.” Taggart also said the students he met so far were “very nice.”

The Chainsmokers are seasoned performers when it comes to college campuses, saying they’ve been everywhere in the U.S. In the upcoming months, the duo is set to perform in Brazil, Australia and Asia. They will also be performing at the music festival Tomorrowland in Belgium at the end of July.

“We’re nervous to see how people respond and to see how global this thing is,” Toggart said. “It will be eye opening.”

Toggart and Pall said they have an “awesome” follow up to “#SELFIE” coming up soon.

“I don’t think we thought ‘#SELFIE’ would be our first original song we would release, so I think the next song we’re putting out is closer to the type of music we want to make and be known for,” Pall said. “It will have an appeal to everyone that became a fan of ‘#SELFIE.’”

“Whether you like dance, rap or hip hop you will enjoy this song,” Pall said. “It’s definitely a challenge but it will be fun to do.”

Taggart shared his advice for students who hope to pursue careers in music.

“Don’t study music, you can teach yourself pretty much everything you need to know, and if you don’t have the patience for that you’re probably not going to make it anyway.”

As the rain continued to fall, it was hard not to imagine being at The Chainsmokers dream venue described earlier.

“An island with lots of golden retrievers,” Pall said.

Swoon.
