Construction of new dining hall reveals new retail outlets, food options

Construction of the new Lakeside Dining Hall at Elon University is nearing completion. Scheduled to open in spring 2013, the building will house several retail vendors as well as a dining hall serving both local and international cuisine. The retail dining area will include Freshii, a vendor offering fast, fresh food such as salads, wraps and soups, as well as several other grab-and-go options. There is space in the retail area for a full-scale Chick-fil-A, but construction of the restaurant has been paused until a university-appointed study committee examines Elon’s partnership with the franchise.

Winter Term trip to Israel encourages students to think with ‘heads, hearts’

The proposal has been approved. The itinerary is being planned. But the program almost didn’t happen. Chaplain Jan Fuller proposed the idea of having a Winter Term study abroad course in Israel shortly after she came to Elon University last September, but she initially had reservations. “As I wrote the proposal for the trip, I threw my hands up in the air several times and thought, ‘What am I trying to do?’” she said.

Campus Police stop armed woman at Danieley Center

Campus security apprehended a young woman in possession of a rifle, ammunition and other weapons on Elon University's campus Sunday, according to an email sent by Dr. Smith Jackson, Vice President and Dean of Students. "Elon Campus Police averted a potentially dangerous situation today when they took into custody Alexis Gray, 18, of Holland, Pennsylvania, a student at a Pennsylvania university," Jackson said in the email. Gray's parents alerted her former boyfriend, an Elon student, that she was on her way to Elon and that they were concerned for her welfare.

Security presence in Smith angers some students

Campus Security is around to keep students safe, but their presence in the Smith dorm is putting some freshman boys on edge, to the point that some have decided to transfer. Freshman David Friedlander, who lives on the third floor of Smith, is one of them. "I am deciding to transfer because of Elon's policies with their strictness, and how they treat students, especially freshman," Friedlander said.
