Elon University football has named defensive coordinator Tony Trisciani as the new head coach. This announcement follows the resignation of Curt Cignetti on Friday afternoon. Trisciani joined the Phoenix under Cignetti in 2017.
Following the announcement on Dec. 14 from Elon University Athletics about the departure of football head coach Curt Cignetti after two seasons with the Phoenix, some players took to social media with their reactions.
Curt Cignetti has resigned as the head coach for Elon University football and has signed on as the new head coach for in-conference rival James Madison University. Cignetti went 14-9 in his two seasons with the Phoenix and led Elon to back-to-back FCS Playoff appearances for the first time in the program’s history. Cignetti’s landmark win in his time at Elon came over his new team when Elon went to Harrisonburg and beat the Dukes 27-24.
Walking out onto the field at Gibbs Stadium in Spartanburg, South Carolina, to play Wofford College, no one knew for sure whether or not this would be Elon University football’s last game of the season. The ramifications of the game were very simple: win and advance to play Kennesaw State University the following weekend. Lose – and it was the end of the road for this campaign. While fighting until the last whistle, the Phoenix fell to the Terriers 19-7 and marked the end of a season full of ups and downs for the program. But before Elon got to that point, they had a whirlwind of a season that deserves a rewind.
