President Joe Biden visits Durham, kicks off ‘Investing in America’ tour

U.S. President Joe Biden kicked off his “Investing in America” tour with a visit to the Tar Heel State Tuesday, highlighting multiple pieces of legislation related to the tour’s  agenda. These include the Inflation Reduction Act, the CHIPS and Science Act, the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act and the American Rescue Plan. The White House is using the tour to highlight Biden’s domestic agenda of growing the economy from the “bottom up.”

CNN Chief Medical Correspondent to speak at Elon University

Gupta, a multiple Emmy-Award-winning chief medical correspondent for CNN, will deliver the 2023 Baird Lecture on Tuesday March 28 at 7 p.m. in Alumni Gym. The lecture is a part of Elon University’s Speaker Series, presented by WUNC North Carolina Public Radio, “Living Well in a Changing World.”

Elon Town Council approves future purchase of new ladder truck

Fire Chief Landon Massey asked Elon’s Town Council to fund the $2 million purchase of a new ladder truck. During the March 27 town council meeting, the council voted to approve the purchase for the new truck in 2025, which is when payment would start. The council’s vote today did not determine where the money would come from.  Massey said there is an option to prepay for the truck, meaning the town would pay the entire cost before getting the truck. The benefit to this option would be a discount of $81,500. Both Massey and Town Manager Rich Roedner did not recommend this option.

Elon Chabad, Panhellenic Association host second annual Mega Challah Bake

After a positive outcome last year, Elon Chabad and the Panhellenic Association partnered again to bring their second annual Mega Challah Bake. This year's rendition of the event featured speeches, a musical performance and bonding experiences. The event is being held in time for all attendees to enjoy the sacred bread before members of the Jewish faith celebrate the upcoming high holiday of Passover, during which the most religious of the Jewish population abstain from eating leavened or bread made with yeast for a whole week.

Elon University softball completes win for Strike Out Cancer

In its annual Strike Out Cancer game, the Elon University softball team faced another conference opponent in Towson for the rubber match of the three-game series and defeated the Tigers 12-4 in five innings. The game started off with a ceremonial first pitch by breast cancer survivor Ashanti Marshall, representing the Burlington-based nonprofit Little Pink Houses of Hope.

Elon University baseball sweeps series, fights cancer with haircuts

Going for the series sweep and the eighth straight Colonial Athletic Association victory, the Elon University baseball team showed out strong, shutting out the Delaware Blue Hens 1-0. But the best part came after, when the team stayed to stand up in the fight against pediatric cancer, auctioning off haircuts to raise $7,738 for Vs. Cancer.

Elon University hosts colorful Holi celebration

More than 100 Elon students and community members celebrated Holi, the Hindu Festival of Colors Friday afternoon at Speakers Corner. Elon University sophomores Clara Watkins and Jasmine Walker are two of the five multifaith interns for the Truitt Center for Religious and Spiritual Life. The cohort planned this year's Holi Celebration. This year, Holi was observed on March 8, but the university celebrated on March 24. Watkins said it gave them something to look forward to after spring break.
