Football Preview: Wofford @ Elon, Sept. 29

The Elon University football team is finding themselves sort of like the victims of Monty Python's Spanish Inquisitors. There is a sense in which the same thing is attacking them, at least in the last two weeks. Unfortunately for the Phoenix, those attacking them have more bite than the Rack. Elon faces the battering triple-option, run-first offense for the second week in a row in this week's opponent, the Wofford College Terriers.

There’s no question who the main target of the Elon University football team’s defense this Saturday. He’s the reigning Southern Conference Player of the Year, a first-team All-American by the Associated Press, Sports Network and Phil Steele and is on the 2012 Walter Payton Award Watch List. But the Phoenix is not afraid of the player who fulfills what was written above, Wofford College senior fullback Eric Breitenstein. “We’re not scared of any one player,” said Elon senior defensive lineman Olufemi Lamikanra.

Volleyball drops two Southern Conference matches

After the loss against the College of Charleston Saturday, Sept. 22, Elon University’s varsity women’s volleyball team is now 0-2 in the Southern Conference with an overall record of 7-10. The Phoenix fell to the Cougars in three sets, which follows a loss against the University of North Carolina at Greensboro that went to a decisive final fifth set. Both senior captain Ali Deatsch and head coach Mary Tendler said being consistent is something the team needs to work on as whole. “We can be a tough team and we can fight,” Deatsch said.

Post 9-11 documentary seeks to lessen stereotyping

In the wake of a tragic event, the dominant population often determines the face of the enemy. A documentary titled Divided we Fall: Americans in the Aftermath, which was screened at Elon University Monday, addresses how Americans identify those affiliated with terrorism and how such stereotypes perpetuate violence in the nation. After the 9/11 terrorist attacks, people in the United States began to associate turban-wearing Americans with religious extremism.

A magic show on a university campus cannot be an easy thing to perform. But Sept. 25 in McCrary Theater, Kevin Spencer was up to the challenge of giving a show that surpassed the power of skepticism. “The Spencers: Theatre of Illusion” is a husband and wife team; Kevin is the magic man and his wife, Cindy, is his lovely assistant.

RB Eastman to miss at least 3-4 weeks

Elon University head coach Jason Swepson said today that junior running back Matt Eastman might miss the rest of the season. "He's going to get surgery on his knee in the next day or so," Swepson said after Tuesday's practice.
